Big Ten writers preseason All Big Ten team

Marcus didn't vote for Epping or Williams, voted for Murray

Memo to the Big 10 Writers. The initial BCS, Coaches, and AP Polls are out. Michigan State is rated number 3 in the Nation. Ohio state made it to number 10 in one of the polls. The National Media sees the Defending Big 10 Champions as their favorite. Now I know that won't play well in Columbus. But they should remember they were the favorites and were schooled by the Spartans.

NW guy voted for Campion as a guard. Pirsig steam picking up in other markets? Probably just an uninformed mistake, though.

A little surprised to not see a single vote for Cockran.

He was the only guy that actually DID make an All Conference team last year. To be fair though DE is easily the Big Ten's strongest position group and it is one of the best in quite some time. Gregory is a projected top 5 pick, Calhoun and Spence are projected first rounders and Bosa was a top 5 freshman last year. I still think Cockran is on their level though.

What polls are out? You're looking at last year's final polls which has MSU at 3 and OSU at 10. Even in the BCS era the initial BCS rankings didn't come out until like 6 weeks in the season.

Not sure if they count red-shirt frosh as rookies, but I hope Edwards makes a run for that award.

I hope one or more of our linebackers makes a name for himself as one of Big best. Wilson and Campbell have that potential.

Sawvel says Murray is as good as any in conference. BBC wasn't far behind him last August. Wells can ball.

I really like our safeties. Travis had a very nice Spring. Sounds like Ced Thompson has been working his ass off. Antonio Johnson right with those guys.

Cobb could put up 1,500 plus, which will garner more attention for him, and the OL guys.

Hope Santoso or whoever replaces Hawthorne can get name known.

I wouldn't.

Cobb reminds me a lot of Tellis Redmon, not fast, but effective. And a little of Terry Jackson II who looked good when given the job (and had a nice offensive line to run behind) but once some quality backs came on the team, he rarely saw the field again...

Cobb isn't slow. He can outrun many DBs. Lacking elite 4.4 speed doesn't make him "slow". Facing stacked boxes all day asma result of a pathetic passing attack makes it all the more amazing he hit 1200 yards.

Furthermore, he's underrated even by gopher fans. He gets stronger as the game goes on. His first half avg rush was 4.40 yds, jumping to 5.69 in the second half. If I'm not mistaken he was the only rusher to go over 100 yards vs Michigan State.

No, he's not Maroney but he has great vision and patience and is durable at almost 230 pounds. He'll be even better with a decent passing attack this year.

+1.

If I were to compare a Gopher back from yesteryear, I'd go with Pinnix/ with more power. I could see some Tellis as well though.

I'm not sure of the criteria they are using but I would argue Maxx Williams would be #1 if he played for Ahia' State. The Rutgers guy had better numbers but he was targeted a lot more. Maxx figures to be an even bigger part of the offense this year. There will be passing.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Anecdotally, I'm acquaintances with one of the USC beat writers for one of the newspapers down here, and to be honest, they aren't necessarily more knowledgeable about other teams than an informed fan like Die Hard Gopher. I learn a lot of factoids from him, Dpo, husker et al. These polls are limited by the fact these writers probably aren't watching every gopher game. Antonio Thompson and Michael Ekpe.

He can make a guy miss and has some nice moves in the open field for a 225 pound back and has above average vision but he is still nothing close to elite. Poor mans Leveon Bell if you ask me.

Most first team All Big Ten backs would have taken it the distance while still displaying plenty of power and toughness. The second team and honorable mention backs get caught from behind. This is why he isn't elite.

I have been high on David Cobb since his first series last year. He's obviously not in the same class as Abdullah. But he's top 4 in the conference.

I never called him slow. I called him very slow--or was it comically slow? I forget.

He's a natural RB. Good vision, good balance, good awareness.

He's way better than Pinnix and Redmon. And way worse than MBIII or Larry (although he's a more natural runner than Larry, who really wasn't a complete football player).

Basically.

David left 2 or 3 touchdowns on the field for us last year. He has three gears, that's it.

Did I say he was better than gordon? All I said is that he isn't slow, which is a fact. If you look at the stats not many backs had more 30 plus yard runs than Cobb. Most backs need some fortuitous down field blocking to make those home runs. Even the wisky backs didn't have a huge number of long runs. It's more perception than reality.

He did break a tackle at the LOS in one of those vids that might have tripped up a smaller back like Abdullah or Mark.

I suppose you have to give Marcus credit for not being a homer. (or not) The Indiana beat writer had several Indiana players on his all-conf team.

I would have guessed more votes for Maxx, and at least 1 for Cockran. But, respect is earned. If the Gophers are playing in (and winning) a big-time bowl game in January, no one will give a rat's buttocks about a pre-season poll.

In the first clip, the safety had the angle the whole way. I doubt Berkley would have broken that one. Or almost anyone.

In the second clip, yeah, he just didn't have it and got run down.

The part about Pinnix and Redmon is that they both were patient runners. Cpbb is patient as well. That is why I said Cobb was like Pinnix with more power. IMHO Barber was a different type of back. Yes MBIII had good vision as well, but he was a power back, and a redzone specialist. There was a reason they called Barber and Maroney Thunder and Lightning.

Like
John Galt said, the defense had the angle on him on the first run. Even the second, the defense had the angle. Both runs were against PSU. I repeat Penn State University. Linebacker U. Chew on that for a moment.

We are pretty spoiled when we are complaining about Cobb. He is a very solid back that can and will help our Gophers win many games.
