Big Ten Power Rankings - After Week 9 Thread

FanSided chimes in:

4. Minnesota

I am fully intrigued by what P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers have been able to do this season. Beating Maryland by 42 points isn’t necessarily that remarkable of an accomplishment, but Minnesota is undefeated at 8-0. That right there is a fairly remarkable accomplishment for a football program still working to build. Minnesota has a tough slate of games set in November, but there’s a chance that the Golden Gophers will have double-digit wins at the end of the season.

Detroit Free Press chimes in:

3. Minnesota (8-0)
Last week: 3. The Golden Gophers will enter the final month of the season with their record unblemished. Perhaps only the spunky optimist P.J. Fleck saw this coming. Fleck has helped Minnesota navigate an easy stretch in its schedule that concluded Saturday with a 52-10 demolition of Maryland. Now, it starts to get tough. Following a bye, Minnesota plays Penn State and Iowa in consecutive weeks with a matchup against Wisconsin looming shortly thereafter. Time to get out the paddles.

Next up: Bye.

Bucky's 5th Quarter chimes in:

3. (4) Minnesota (8-0), W - 52-10 vs. Maryland, Next Week: BYE

However unlikely it may be, the Golden Gophers are 8-0 on the year after a 52-10 blowout win over Maryland. Running back Rodney Smith had his fifth straight game with 100-plus rushing yards, finishing with 103 yards and a touchdown against the Terps. The Golden Gophers completely dominated time of possession 42:53 to 17:07 and converted 30 first downs in their convincing win. Minnesota’s schedule to date hasn’t exactly been a murderer’s row, but the Gophers deserve a ton of credit for winning the games in front of them and putting themselves in a position to control their own destiny in the Big Ten West.

MLive.com chimes in:

3. MINNESOTA (8-0, 5-0)

The Gophers are still unbeaten and now have two weeks to prepare for their toughest test of the season. Minnesota ran all over Maryland (321 yards rushing) and dominated the time of possession. So P.J. Fleck spent a few moments postgame lobbying for ESPN's "College GameDay" to visit when Minnesota hosts Penn State on Nov. 9, a matchup of two of the Big Ten's three unbeatens. Too bad LSU-Alabama is also the same day. (Last week: 3)

Detroit News chimes in:

5. Minnesota (8-0, 5-0) – You only play the teams on your schedule, and for the Golden Gophers, that has been a very generous schedule. Give them credit for remaining unbeaten and reaching eight wins for the first time since Jerry Kill did it in 2013 and 2014. But a closer look shows the Gophers’ five conference opponents are 6-19 in Big Ten play. The Gophers have the next week off before getting a chance to prove they’re for real with games against Penn State, Iowa and Wisconsin all coming up. Last week: 5.

Hoosier Huddle chimes in:

3. MINNESOTA (8-0, 5-0)
Last Week’s Ranking: 3

Defeated Maryland 52-17

Minnesota’s dream season continued with a blowout win against Maryland. The Gophers racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense, including 321 rushing yards on 54 carries. Minnesota held Maryland to just 210 yards of offense in what was truly a lopsided game. While this Minnesota team hasn’t played a single Big Ten team over .500, the Gophers have taken care of business regardless. With a week off before their biggest game of the year, Minnesota has a chance to cement themselves as a contender against Penn State in two weeks.

Inside NU chimes in:

3. Minnesota
Last Week’s Ranking: 4

Last Week’s Result: Win vs. Maryland 52-10

Next Week: Bye

Minnesota officially leads the Big Ten West, jumping Wisconsin after another easy win put them at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Gophers showed their depth as a team, utilizing seven different ball carriers this past Saturday to run the ball for a total of 371 yards.

The next two games against Penn State and Iowa will be crucial tests for the Gophers as try to prove that they belong at the top.

7. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Last Week: 52-10 win vs. Maryland (8-0)

SP+ Rankings: 12

The Gophers beat another cupcake. They’re still undefeated. I still don’t quite believe in them, though I’m getting closer to becoming a believer. They’re on a bye this week but next week they’ll finally take on a legitimately good opponent as they’ll host Penn State in a matchup between two undefeated teams. That’s definitely one to look forward to.

If he wants to discount our "cupcake" wins and put us behind his first five, that's fine, but he has Indiana above us. Indiana also hasn't beaten anyone but "cupcakes", and they have two losses (including one to a not good MSU team).

Indiana, ranked ahead has beaten, uh let's see.... Ball State, Eastern Illinois, UCONN, Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska. Beat Maryland by... 6. Okay. Beat Nebraska by... let's look... okay, beat Nebraska by a touchdown.

But yeah. The Hoosiers are looking much better than the 8-0 Gophers.

Putting Indiana, and Iowa ahead of us right now is a joke. Frankly so is putting Michigan and Wisconsin but at least I can kind of understand those two.

He knocks our schedule then ranks Indiana ahead of us with their 3 Big Ten wins against Maryland, Rutgers, and Nebraska (by 7). I get that these power rankings are just fluff but there is no scenario where Indiana should be ahead of us in any power rankings right now.

3 seems fair. We shouldn't be 1 or 2 but I don't really see how 4 or 5 make sense.

If this dude gave any credence to performance against common opponents, he would flip Indiana and Minnesota.

Ho hum.
