4. Maryland Terrapins
Average FBS team expected win percentage: .827
Opponents: vs. Howard (Sept. 3), at Florida International (Sept. 10), at UCF (Sept. 17)
Maryland is one of eight Power 5 teams that scheduled two nonconference road games, so like Washington, the Terrapins deserve credit for attempting to challenge themselves. Yet, Florida International and UCF both rank outside the top 100 in preseason FPI, and Howard is one of the weaker FCS teams in the country. That's exactly the type of schedule new coach D.J. Durkin could use to begin his career.
5. Minnesota Golden Gophers
Average FBS team expected win percentage: .820
Opponents: vs. Oregon State (Sept. 1), vs. Indiana State (Sept. 10), vs. Colorado State (Sept. 24)
At first glance, Minnesota's nonconference schedule doesn't look that bad. It includes a Power 5 opponent and a Mountain West team that won 10 games a few years ago. But all three games are at home and none of the teams are expected to be better than average in 2016. Further, the Golden Gophers have a bye week before facing Colorado State and a major travel advantage against Oregon State, which are both factors included in FPI's SOS calculation.
