I've been watching Gopher football for about 30 years. One thing that's been a constant is that Minnesota teams find new, unique, and innovative ways to lose. Maybe that's what makes us appreciate the victories more. But the truly memorable, gut-wrenching losses that become part of folklore fall into several categories:
Getting Jobbed by the BT refs:
A couple of key examples:
The Purdue game when the refs didn't know the color scheme/out of bounds of our endzone (not to mention the Russian timekeeper towards the end of that game)
The phantom PI call in OT vs. PSU about 6 years ago
Monumental Collapses in the fourth quarter (a.k.a. A Mason)
The 2003 meechigan game
The Ttech game (Doh! thx MrGopher - I had that one in my head, but forgot to include it)
The game vs. Wisky 2 years ago
several NU games
Getting absolutely blown out
Iowa 2 years ago
The 84-13 NU game in 1983 (I was there!)
just about every game vs. SCum and tOSU while I was in school
Most of the BT games during the Wacker era. At least the ones vs. teams that didn't suck.
Losing the game on a heartbreaking last play
The hail Mary vs. NU
The blocked punt vs. Wisky
The moronically coached game vs. NU a couple of years ago
Not Getting Off the Bus
The game vs. MSU in 2003 right after the SCum debacle
Most games in Camp Randall under Glen
Ohio in the late 1990's
Illinois last year
USD
Choking against an opponent that most of the country couldn't find on a map
University of the Pacific
USD
This list is not meant to be all-inclusive, and I'm sure others could expand upon it greatly. I'm probably repressing a few of the more painful defeats.
You'll note that Brewster has managed to amass an entry in damn nearly every category. I've colored them red for your convenienceThe only category missing is getting hosed by BT officials, but since you have to be winning at some point in the game to have the refs steal it from you his opportunities have been somewhat limited.
My point is that some coaches specialized in collapses, or getting blown out, or losing to a school that advertises on matchbook covers. Brewster has managed to check off damn nearly every box. Someone please explain to me why he should have a 5th year, or why our program is doomed for another decade if we have the audacity to try and hire someone competent?
