Not much of an issue considering the overall awful state of the Gophers basketball program, but Betts is a bust. Facts: A 3/4 star in his third full year at a P6 program and he barely sees the floor. He averages less than 10 minutes per game for basically a last place P6 team. Didn't even see the floor in a third of the games so far this season. Ben will not be the Gophers coach in 2025/2026 and I am predicting Betts will not be on the roster. I wish him luck wherever he ends up. I do believe he could have developed into a contributor at a P6 under an actual coach.

You could have said he was a bust the 2nd year he was here after his redshirt year. A player that reclassifies, sits that year then doesn't see the floor that next year is a bust.

Was definitely hoping things would click for him this season but they clearly have not. Tough to know for sure how much of it was the player and how much was the coach but he looks like someone who definitely needs to drop down in competition level some.

I know players make mistakes but to foul with a 2 point lead is just a stunning lack of awareness for a college basketball player.

It was interesting last game he was in place for Garcia after fouled out. That means the coach is thinking he is playing more of a 4 position. My opinion, he would be better developed as a 3 Wing position his size would be an asset compared to 4 where seems a little small. Edmonds probably be more of a fit for the 4 position at the moment.

Yes, it could have been a small brain fart on the foul, but it wasn't what lost the game. 1) Seemed all coaches were screaming to foul while Mitchell attempting to make 2nd free throw. Mitchell had 2 free throws. Pull them all aside and explain...Makes 2, let it play out, makes 1...foul. Misses them both, like we have been doing all night, then we have to play good defense and not give up the game tying or winning basket.

After the miss, it seemed like it wasn't just Betts that didn't know what was going on and didn't get back. The OSU player was quickly going by everyone and likely was going to have a good look at basket to tie or even WIN with a 3 pointer. Not saying the foul wasn't a possible mistake, but in the end it did force OSU to make 2 free throws to just TIE the game and not lose the game. Would be the same situation where if a guy was going in for a layup, you would likely foul to force free throws instead of giving up the basket. They just made the clutch free throws unlike our 12 -27.

Betts had an all time blunder in the moment....no point in justifying what he did........
and even if they were up by three and the plan was to foul.....you dont do it when the player is 75 feet from the hoop

I disagree. I think Betts is definitely a 4. He doesn’t move, dribble, or see the game well enough to play on the wing. Those are skills that are just really difficult to develop

Yeah, I agree with him that the foul maybe didn't cost us the game but there is no justification that would make fouling in that situation a good decision (outside of maybe a hard foul to stop someone from scoring right at the basket). Betts completely lost track of the score and made a massive mistake.

Doesn't necessarily mean he is a lost cause but more proof that he just doesn't seem ready to play at this level.

He didn't lose it any more then when Parker Fox left his man under the basket with 10 seconds left in regulation.

Yep....pretty long list of reasons why we managed to lose a game we had no business losing. In the end still comes back to make some damn free throws and the game can't be lost by a couple bonehead mistakes.

Betts had a "Chris Weber" moment on Monday. This doesn't mean he's a bust. It means he hasn't played much and all of a sudden he's being given minutes in an overtime game. Give the kid some slack. Monday was, once again, an evidence of a head coach not preparing his guys for situations. Take your fingers away from pointing at Betts and return them to Ben Johnson.

Where did the rumor come from that he was a highly rated recruit? 247 has him rated 52nd at Small Forward coming out of high school and many of the players around him in the rankings are at low and mid majors.

As a coach, you drill the scenarios in the timeout several times. He makes both, do not foul. He makes one, but misses the other, foul, but not while shooting a three. He misses both, you don't foul, and don't give up an easy three. Plus I ask who was the "floor general" out there? That guy should have also been reminding players of the situation and what to do and when. But my guess is they have none. There is no leadership anywhere, and it is a reflection of the coach.

If he told them all this and the kid still screwed up, you can say that in a post-game without totally trashing the kid. But to talk around it tells everyone nobody is driving the bus, the wheels are off and it is tumbling down the ditch.

I know some struggle with being critical of college players but this one is on Betts. Doesn't have to define his career but he messed up in a key situation.

Obviously coaches share in the blame in terms of getting players prepared but at some point you have to be able to trust that a D1 basketball player is going to know the score and situation enough not to foul a player who is nowhere near the basket when your team is up 2 late in a game.

You just really needed to be first on this huh?

The 2022 recruiting class will ultimately be CBJ's downfall (along with just being a bad coach). Whether through wrong evaluations or not being able to coach them up, it turned out to be bad either way.

Betts - hasn't done anything in 3 years.
Carrington - did little while here, playing on a bad Tulsa team.
Henley - did even less while here. Playing on a bad UNLV team.
JOJ - was essentially benched towards the end of last year. Playing on a bad Cal team.
Payne - the one positive of this class. Good contributor. But as we see, on a good/elite team best served as a role player.

I remember being told I didn't know dick about basketball, or program building because I didn't want to wait until these players were juniors or seniors. Well, I'm pretty sure if this was our starting 5 this year, we'd be even worse than we are now. Johnson should have focused more on the portal to team up with Garcia, Battle and Cooper.

His body looks ready but maybe the head isn't quite ready. People have to remember though that these things do happen and even really good players can have mental lapses. Probably most people who saw it still remember Chris Webber's famous blunder in the national championship game where he called a timeout they didn't have when they were down by two, received a technical, and the opponent got the ball and two free throws. Chris Webber certainly was ready to play at the highest collegiate level.

Yep. The kid hasn't played a meaningful minute in over two years.

I was totally wrong on Betts. Saw him play a couple times in CO high school (a buddy coaches in the same conference). He was really good in those games, went something like 11-18 from 3 and scored mid 20's both games. Just goes to show how difficult it is to project high school talent
I don't think you were wrong. He has some talent. I don't think we are going to see him "find it" here under this coach. Right now it is obvious that he is viewed as Dawson Garcia's backup which means he is going to get very few minutes to figure things out.

I didn't mean you in general I meant to say anyone who looked at him as a bust could do it the year following his reclassified year.
I know you didn’t mean me specifically. I just said I did because I was definitely in the minority saying he was a bust last year.
