Well, in the last few weeks I have been able to use Gopher Hole to learn that the Minnesota job is worse than Arizona State, Miami, and Colorado. Today I learned here that Indiana, thanks to adding seats in one of their open end zones, is now equal to Minnesota (not to mention being closer to all those recruits).

For a couple seconds, I was thinking about listing every BCS school and typing something smart-ass about why the coaching job is better there. I then realized I have a life and it was too much work.

Regardless, I realize it has been a mostly-tough 40 year run of mediocre football but a lot of us apparently can always see the bad side of any situation. In some ways, it has gotten so bad I have to go over to Buckyville to read something encouraging about the MN coaching job, and football program.

Hey, we just ended the season on a two game winning streak and beat a hated rival. We are about to find out who the next coach is and quite frankly there are a lot of exciting candidates out there. I'm pumped and I wish we had a Gopher game to watch next week. I'm already looking forward to 2011.

The last two weeks, this team showed they CAN play, maybe it took losing Brewster, new scheme, or just experience, but they proved they can win games.

Next year we will have a new QB (a highly recruited one at that) a new head coach and hopefully other quality recruits coming in and possibly some guys with the new coach. The team improved through the season and hopefully that continues into next year.

Am I possibly falling into the same trap this year as last year? Maybe. But nothing wrong with a little optimism after a 2 game winning streak and actually looking good on the field.

I think we can find a D-3 job opening or two where Minnesota is the better situation by comparison.

Seriously, I'm with Schnauzer.

Isn't Akron known for Tires or glass or something? Whichever it is, that's likely to be a huge factor for any potential HC. Also, the weather is a major plus for Akron. And they play in relatively weak conference, so I think think they have a better shot at the BCS. Plus, Akron is located in the recruiting hotbed of Ohio. And Akron probably also has beaches, ski resorts, gold courses, electricity, etc.

I am sure the Zips are the only show in town as well, they don't have to compete with the VIkes.

Yep...that is what I find a little annoying...treating the U job as if it is more of a disgrace then an excellent opportunity at a major U which does not need to take a back seat to anyone.

They have not fully invested in the football program (until now anyway), but it is still an awesome opportunity.

Dont forget about Lebron James being from Akron as well. He could help with fundraising, recruitment enhancement and recommendations for a new coach. Give it a bit and guarantee St. Thomas fan could come up with recommendations on how coaches would rather go coach there than at the U.

What gets me the most in reading some of these other boards in talking about the Minnesota Head Coaching search or recruitment is that they also bring up the cold. They make it sound as if the North Pole is located somewhere in Minnesota and that Polar Bears roam free and eat little children when they are outside playing during recess. I am sorry folks, but is called winter. It is cold and snows in Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Pittsburgh, St Louis, and many other places and they also play football in it.

I know. I have a history of going off on the weather misunderstandings that exist outside of MN. Unfortunately, a full 25% of the time I find myself having to prove it to Minnesotans too, so don't look for that misconception to go away any time soon.

It is just part of that "awe shucks, we're not good enough" MN psyche, I guess.

On the Indiana board there was a comment about the scenery of Minnesota not being as good as Southern Indiana and it went something like this

.. well if you take away the lakes and the Mississippi River and the trees then I would take Southern Indiana in a second as far as having better scenery.

I am sorry, but if you take everything away then you are better. This is just getting ridiculous.

My personal favorite is the girls comment. People in the south must think that all of the girls north of the Mason/Dixon line are toads and have grown a second head. Yeah, is Minnesota better than Arizona State. Easy answer... no, but neither do they and if a kid is only going to school because of the girls I think that you have more problems than just that.

Rubber. They are the Rubber Capital of the World.

MN can't compete with that.

Their high school kids get a good work out toiling in Akron's vast, underground network of rubber mines. It gives them good strong frames that our farm boys simply can't match. All they need is a guy to coach them up and to a man they'll all play like four star recruits after a couple of seasons.
