Best Back to Back Recruiting Classes in Modern Gopher Football History!!

I am not making that statement comparing Minnesota to the rest of the country or the Big Ten. I am comparing us to what our history is. Glen Mason's last six classes averaged 2.43 on Rivals. Tim Brewster's three classes 3.0. But they were built
on sand! The 2008 class is recognized as our Gopher best. The 2009 class we pretty much got nothing at all from, other than Michael Carter as a senior and Ra'Shede Hageman, Ed Olson. 2010 is better than 2009 but 2011,2012 and now 2013 are better
than 2010. 2011 and 2012 we had 19 guys rated 3 stars each year. In contrast Mason had classes of 6 and 7 3 star guys. Jerry Kill's 3 classes average close to 2.8 on Rivals, but the best 3 classes of the last 12 years are 2008, 2012 and 2013
based on stars and the eyeball test together. If you go down the list of the players in 2012, every single kid is already either playing or expected to battle for playing time in 2013 on the field. Jerry Kill and his staff can evaluate talent and recruit!

We have never recruited the walk on talent we have these past two seasons which is another significant part of recruiting.
The PWO class in 2013 is a literally a Glen Mason recruiting class!
1 Chad Fahning OL De La Salle 6-7 275
2 Jeff Borchardt WR Wayzata 6-1 190
3 Brian Smith Jr WR Brookfield,WI 6-4 210
4 Michael Conway QB LaCrosse Aquinas
5 Conor Rhoda QB Cretin 6-3 190
6 Nick Hart TE Prior Lake 6-5 220
7 Chandler Wright OG Wayzata 6-3 270
8 Aaron Roundtree DB Eagan
9 Hunter Friesen Mankato
10 Matt Leidner C Lakeville So 6-1 270
and I'm probably missing some guys

All of our 2013 scholarship recruits are rated 3 stars by somebody among Rivals, Scout and ESPN. Many of Brewster's top rated recruits never got to campus, never played or barely played. Jerry Kill's 2012 class is here with PWO and all contributing. I believe 2013 will be a very solid contributing group as well. Therefore we presently have the BEST Back to Back Gopher Recruiting Classes Ever in the pipeline!

(Plus, this was accomplished with an inherited, really screwed up numbers availability situation to recruit from.) And I'm not trying to bash Mason or Brewster. I'm just excited about what we are accomplishing now.

great post and analysis. some really good points made in here. thanks!

Outside of OL and kickers nobody wins anything with walk ons in the B1G. Talking up walk on QB and WR is just a daydream. If they are on the depth chart the program is in deep trouble.

Why are you even here? You certainly don't enjoy anything about this program.

Maybe it would be best for you to find a different hobby.

Makes sense, Wisconsin's best WR was a former walk-on and they have been god awful the last 3 years. Thanks for the insight!

as michael mcdonald once sang: "what a fool believes........what a fool believes". such a clueless post on your part. thanks though.

Ray Charles could have seen this one coming. Not sure why I got so much grief here for calling it.

Yep. Don't forget he is a FL kid. How has Kill been doing lately in FL? Sorry, game over.

Real bad news. He is from Gainesville, FL. I would think he is off our board with an offer of SEC football and a game or two in his hometown.

I have a Mr. De'Vondre Campbell from Cypress Lake (Fla.) that shunned an offer from Tennessee (by the way, that's an SEC school) holding on line 1. Would you like me to give him a message, Darby?

Yeah, Go Gophers! Ha.

Interesting to see this draft class put in that positive context, and I certainly like the notion of our recruiting classes getting better (even if its not relative to rest of the Big Ten). I trust that Kill is recruiting to his system and maximizing his resources to get the players he needs for the proven system he has. In the end, the number of stars we average per class is less important than how well Kill's system translates to the Big Ten. Personally, I think it will, but to what end I'm not sure (Mason-level seasons or beyond?).

If you were to believe the Reusse et al, Country Jer is getting along with the worst class in the Big Ten and we're all idiots for praising him. Then again, I could write the column now if we had a class rated in the upper half of the Big Ten. Headline - "Don't get excited Gopher Fans, Stars mean nothing".

Aside from the fact that their starting QB for most of this season was a walk-on as well. Some brilliant insight by Derbs.

LOL. Stalking my posts. Glad you are fired up about reeling in this JUCO. Who knows what really went down in Campbell's recruitment. He has been all over the board. I hope his playing career is a little more steady than his recruitment. Glad to have him.

Just as brilliant insight as your break down of the Webb recruitment. You can cherry pick a walk on example if you want but they are not going make or break the program. That is my point. Kill is going to have to recruit a bunch of B1G level scholarship student athletes to win. It's that simple.

Show me where I broke down the Webb commitment, in even a cursory fashion. I'll be waiting.

The kid dropped Tennessee when coaches changed. Kill claims to be only HC to in home visit him. He has three years left. He is really a true sophomore.

The facts are that there is less difference between 4th and 12th (240 points) than between 3rd and 4th (443 points). I'd say that the differences between 4th and 12th are statistically insignificant.

HA!

I know others have pointed this out, but I will break it down for you just to show you the depth of stupidity in this post.

Lets look at the Badgers THIS season.
Joel Stave - QB most of the season - Came to WI as a WO.
Jared Abbrederis - WR (All Big 10) - Came to WI as a WO.
Ethan Armstrong - Starting LB - Came to WI as a WO.
Ethen Hemer - Starting DT (All Big 10 - Hon Mention) - Came to WI as a WO
*I'm not even including Ricky Wagner - OL - who will get drafted into the NFL this coming up draft, because you conceited to OL.

Recently at WI:
This one obscure guy names JJ Watt - DE (All American, NFL Defensive Player of the Year) - Came to WI as a WO.
Brady Ewing - (FB/TE, drafted by Falcons last year) - Came to WI as a WO.

Around the Big 10, just THIS year.
Matt McGloin - QB - Penn State - Led Big 10 in Passing Yards and TDs - Came to PSU as a WO
Jordan Kovacs - S - Michigan - 4 year starter - All Big 10 - Came to Michigan as a WO.

I could keep going and going. You get the gist?

And he has....the vast majority of our recruits were either offered by other Big 10 schools or they were offered by BCS caliber similar schools. This info is out there, you just can't seem to wrap your head around it.

You're speaking facts and logic to him, he doesn't want to hear about it. Texas had him visit in December because they weren't interested. Tennessee was really Middle Tennessee State and the recruiting services messed it up, it was really Kent State.

Pretty sure Matt McGloin was a walk-on at PSU, ended up a 3-year starter at QB, ahead of the likes of a couple of highly-touted blue chip QB recruits.

Oh Bob! You know how people hate facts in arguments! You just made his whole argument based on an opinion in his head.

I agree, our preferred walk-on class is the type of kids (tweeners, fringe FBS/FCS players) that win at NDSU. It is great to have those kids buying into Kill's program and it will only help us with depth, playing time, in practice, etc!
