Bellotti, who said several AD's have called him for advice on their coaching searches, offered his top candidates for the Gophers' position, which could be filled soon. He mentioned San Diego State's Brady Hoke, Air Force's Troy Calhoun, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and Temple's Al Golden.

Bellotti's favorite was Hoke, a former Michigan assistant. But he also endorsed former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, who is 60.

Interesting he mentions Malzahn....wonder if he has any insight into that thought. But then again he mentions Leach, so who knows lol.

This might explain why Kirk Herbstreit implied that he knew who the Gophers were going to hire but hasn't reported it. It's possible that Belotti told him who's getting the job, but Kirk can't report it because of confidentiality between Gophers and Belotti (in this theory Belotti shouldn't have told Kirk though).

My dream of Belotti on the Gopher sidelines just went from 0.01% to 0.00%. :(

To pile on, from FootballScoop this morning:

"Minnesota: Mike Bellotti says the search firm contacted him twice, but that he declined to talk."

Go Gophers!!

I would have loved Bellotti as well. He and Golden have been my 1 and 1A throughout the process. He'd be a great football coach and a great resource on helping choose the next athletic director.

Well ... that doesn't rule out him miming his interest! Or smoke signals!!! Maybe those are the smokescreens everyone's so high on. :D

Sounds like it's Fullmer, the way he kind of brought up his name at the end there, like he might have heard something and better mention him too.

I don't think Belotti has any more idea who will be hired than you are I, Dungy made his recommendations, Belotti made his, etc..

One thing that is interesting to point out. I don't know if anyone listened to Barrerio last night, but he had Glen Mason on and Mason said when he was at Kent State he was approached about the Gopher job and he said he had absolutely no interest. Then they gave the job to Wacker.

Five years later they came back to Mason after Wacker at Kansas and he said he still had no interest in Minnesota. They contacted him a second time and told him quote "We don't know football, we need someone (like you) who knows football and we will allow you to run the team the way you want to."

So when guys say they have no interest we can always go back and make counter offers, promising more. That could be what Maturi is doing right now and that is why this is dragging on SO FRICKING LONG!

This seems like a logical possibility. I've also noticed that during his time in the media, Herbstreit has not been in the habit of breaking stories but rather commenting on them when they take place. As such, it would certainly follow his pattern to not comment until the hire is actually made official. I'm sure he has his finger on it, especially if Bellotti has been talking with Maturi during the search, but wants to wait it out to make it official. In any case, signs point to a hiring being made soon.

Bellotti was my #1 non-Harbaugh pick. Out of that list he said I really hope it's Malzahn. That guy is a rising star and if he is hired you can expect the Gophers to do damage next fall.
