it's time for you prognosticators to put down your predictions for Golden Gopher football in 2010. Minnesota has a tough schedule on paper and there are a lot of unknowns about this year's team. That said, I think they'll surprise some folks this season. They'll win a game or two which will be considered big upsets (hopefully they'll have a trophy or two in the showcase at season end).

My optimistic predictions:

Middle Tennessee State - Gopher Win
South Dakota - Gopher Win
USC - Gopher Win
Northern Illininois - Gopher Win
Northwestern - Gopher Win
Wisconsin - Gopher Loss
Purdue - Gopher Win
Penn state - Gopher Win
Ohio State - Gopher Loss
Michigan State - Gopher Win
Illinois - Gopher Win
Iowa - Gopher Loss

9-3 season is my prediction (I know, very optimistic). If correct, the Gophers will definitely be the surprise team of 2010. Other teams have come out of nowhere, maybe after some favorable bounces Minnesota will experience some good results, too. They're certainly due (long overdue) to have some good breaks go their way.

One final comment: I certainly hope I'm wrong on the border battle predictions.

Let's see your predictions and compare the results at season's end.

Go Gophers!!

Another optimistic 9 and 3!

Middle Tennessee State - Gopher Win

Wisconsin - Gopher Win
Purdue - Gopher Win
Penn state - Gopher Loss
Ohio State - Gopher Loss
Michigan State - Gopher Win
Illinois - Gopher Win
Iowa - Gopher Win

On the Record: I'm going 7-5. Loss @ Purdue, but knock off Penn State & Iowa.

7 - 5 and the Axe comes home!

Wow I thought I was wearing maroon colored glasses.

There we go 7-5 with a win over Penn State. I am picking a loss vs USC not because we cant beat them but our young players it will be their first big game and I am not sure that is good. It should help us for the tough games later in the year.

For all the people that picked the Gophers to beat Iowa and/or Wisconsin, could I ask why? What about this year's team makes you think they could even compete with the Hawkeyes and Badgers, let alone beat them? I honestly think it's unrealistic to even fathom any more than six wins, which sucks, because that will be just enough to bring Brewster back. Grrrrr.....

4 Wins, 8 Losses

Middle Tennessee has as much talent as the Gophers. Remember, it's the first game of the season too AND on the road. Far from a guaranteed win. In fact, I see an L to start the season before we bounce back and take care of South Dakota, which opened the season against St. Amrose just two short seasons ago. Gotta love it...

I want a big piece of that homer pie but in my best attempt to be realistic (and trying to fit my yearly 'team has no flaws' pre season thoughts along side the reality of two .500 seasons and a lot of unanswered questions for this year's squad), here are my predictions:

MTSU WIN 1-0
SD WIN 2-0
USC LOSS 2-1
Northern Illinois WIN 3-1
Northwestern WIN 4-1
Wisconsin LOSS 4-2
Purdue LOSS 4-3
Penn State LOSS 4-4
OSU LOSS 4-5
Michigan State LOSS 4-6
Illinois WIN 5-6
Iowa LOSS 5-7

Although those are my official predictions, I am still holding out hope (as always) that the bounces all go the Gopher's way this year and they find a way to a record better than .500 and another bowl game. I think enough of the team to NOT be surprised if they have a record up to 7-5. Anything better than 7-5 would be a big surprise to me (and a very happy one at that). Unfortunately, I also see the potential for a couple more losses too and I'd be really sad but not shocked at 3-9 too.

Minnesota will perform better than most of the pundits predict and finish the season 6-6.

Iowa:
-Week after hosting Ohio State.
-OL not as good as years past
-Played with them last year
-Bye week the week before will help heal any injuries. I don't like the timing of the bye week just before the season ends, but it will be beneficial for the Iowa game

Could I ask why we should even play out the season and just go with who should & shouldn't win on paper before the season?

What's the logic in picking the Gophers to beat Penn State and Iowa, but not Purdue. That doesn't make sense to me.

Two of them are at home....one of them is on the road.

What logic is involved in Minnesota beating Michigan State, Northwestern & Air Force, yet losing to Illinois & squeaking out a win over South Dakota State.

I guess I'm kind of from the following school of predicitons......NOT EVERY TEAM IS GOING TO WIN EVERY GAME THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO IN 2010!

Middle Tennessee State - Win
South Dakota - Win
USC - Loss
Northern Illininois - Win
Northwestern - Win
Wisconsin - Loss
Purdue - Win
Penn state - Loss
Ohio State - Loss
Michigan State - Loss
Illinois - Win
Iowa - Win

7-5.

Maybe a bit optimistic. Though, at the end of the day I always root for the home team and always give them a chance... "any given team on any given day" and all that. I think we'll beat the teams we're "supposed" to beat (Middle Tenn., Northern IL and SoDak). Despite their troubles I still think USC will be too much. Going into the Big Ten schedule things get muddy. The national media are predicting a disaster based largely on how poorly the Gophers finished out the last season. However I guess I just don't see why Michigan State and Purdue are supposed to make us crap our pants in fear. We lost some starters, but we caved both those teams skulls in last year. I think we've got a good chance to take a win from at least one of those teams on the road. I think Purdue is the safer pick so I went with that one.

We also beat Northwestern in their own yard last year and they're now without their star QB in Kafka. I don't think it's unrealistic to expect a homecoming win.

God, I want a win at sconnie so badly. I hope we get it, but I wouldn't put money on it.

The home slate this year is brutal. But I think we'll take one of those three beastly looking Big 10 home games. I think that we're finally due to get a signature upset this year, and we're due to finally win one of our trophies back (very scientific, I know). So I predict we drop two against PSU and OSU but finally get the long awaited win against Iowa and return the pig to Minneapolis.

3-9

I just don't see much to get excited about right now. Hope I'm very wrong this year but I think the team quits in November on Brewster and this is the end for him.

8-4. Pretty optimistic, but who knows?

My optimistic prediction is 7-5. Not my "best case scenario", but how I think this team, without a great amount of fortune, can realistically do with just some good play. I think OSU and USC are the only two teams where talent is not even. Every other team, we can reasonably expect to go out there and be right there with a chance to win. WILL we? That remains to be seen. But I'll lay it out this way:

Middle Tennessee State - W (1-0)
South Dakota - W (2-0)
USC - L (2-1)
Northern Illinois- W (3-1)
Northwestern - W (4-1)
Wisconsin - L (4-2)
Purdue - W (5-2)
Penn state - W (6-2)
Ohio State - L (6-3)
Michigan State - L (6-4)
Illinois - W (7-4)
Iowa - L (7-5)

And a bowl win, (8-5). This is partly cause I think more than a couple teams on our schedule will prove not as good as expected.

Middle Tennessee State - Win
South Dakota - Win
USC - Win
Northern Illininois - Win
Northwestern - Win
Wisconsin - Loss
Purdue - Loss
Penn state - Win
Ohio State - Loss
Michigan State - Loss
Illinois - Win
Iowa - Loss

7-5. This is on an optimistic day. On a pessimistic day, they lose to USC, PSU and NW and end up 4-8. I would be surprised to see 2-10.

What's the logic in picking the Gophers to beat Penn State and Iowa, but not Purdue. That doesn't make sense to me.

What's the logic of Iowa State last year losing to Kansas State, Texas A&M, and Missouri but beating Nebraska? Sometimes you lose to teams you probably should beat, sometimes you beat teams you probably shouldn't.

You picked us to lose at Middle Tennessee State even without Dasher, but pick us to win at Purdue. Why?

7-5

I have a good feeling about this team. I like their quiet confidence. I like their depth, speed and ahtleticism. I like their leadership. I like the coaching philosophy. I just wish they had a little more experience. Next year is the year I am expecting really big things. But for this year, I am predicting a 7-5 season, with losses to USC, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State and Iowa. Maybe that's being too optimistic, but even if 7-5 doesn't happen, I like this team's long-term potential.

I will not deviate from my prediction back in July:

Middle Tennessee State - Gopher Win
South Dakota - Gopher Win
USC - Gopher Win
Northern Illinois - Gopher Win
Northwestern - Gopher Win
Wisconsin - Gopher Win
Purdue - Gopher Win
Penn state - Gopher Win
Ohio State - Gopher Win

Wisconsin – Loss
Purdue - Loss
Penn State – Loss
Ohio State – Loss

4-8 Hope I am wrong but I just don't have the confidence in Brewster everyone else on this board has. The roster is "light years" ahead of Mason's?

You got to be kidding...

...Middle Tennessee has as much talent as the Gophers...

I try not to knock posters but this is plain stupid - even more so with Dasher out. You can't have gone to either the spring game or the fall scrimmage. This game will not be close. Minnesota will control it start to finish.
