Badgers limited to 21 total schollies for 2012 and 2013 combined

I know we don't have too many scholarships for this year, but does anyone know off hand about how many it looks like we'll have next year?

Are you talking class of '14 recruits? It should be in the neighborhood of 19-20 right now, so it will probably be 23-24 by the time NSD 2014 actually gets here.

Yup, thanks.

How does a program get this out of sync with schollies available per year without any NCAA sanctions?

It happens. A few preferred walk-ons getting rides(4). A couple of greyshirts. A couple of guys with multiple years lost to injury(Kelly & Phillips) who would otherwise be out of the program. One or two kids transferring in.

We have another 2-3 walk-ons who will be on scholarship next year, which will take away scholarships available for that class.

Yeah, this is a good problem to have. Retaining your players and rewarding walk-ons is the ideal approach for a program like Wisconsin (or Minnesota, for that matter).

I do think Minnesota can work this to their benefit by, at the least, forcing Wisconsin to offer kids they might otherwise try to walk-on. TJ Watt will probably get a Wisconsin offer (rivals says he now has one but that's not being confirmed anywhere else I've seen), but I'm sure he's a guy that Wisconsin would have preferred have walk-on or greyshirt this year.

Pretty sure TJ has a greyshirt offer now. They may up that to a full ride if some guys leave the program after the spring. There's a chance some guys who are buried on the depth chart may leave in search of playing time at another school. Usually lose a few guys each year that way - transfers down to ISU, WIU, etc.
