Nice profile on Bart Miller's tenure at UW, per Joe:

Costigan, now a Badgers graduate assistant coach, spent five minutes on the telephone praising Miller this week before halting the conversation to make one thing clear.

“Obviously, I played for Wisconsin, so I’m not a Minnesota fan by any stretch of the imagination,” Costigan said.

“But Coach [Bart] Miller kind of represents everything you want in a coach. He brings contagious enthusiasm and is just a really passionate guy.

“He’s a guy who creates a culture and kind of makes guys do things the right way. As much as it kills me to say, I think Minnesota made a great hire.”

Go Gophers!!

He actually thought we hired this guy from Wiscy.

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~bart/

But seriously, the guy has only lasted one season as OL assistant at UW and NMSU before we hired him away from FAU. I get that his one year with UW coincided with Fatass' last year there. Should we be concerned that he essentially took lesser jobs the last three years?

No, because you can't do much worse than our O line coach of the last 5 years.

Let's not over analyze a position coach. I'm sure he knows what he needs to know. Hell, Brewster is a successful position coach.

No, we should not. Someone wrote (can't find the link) that he was let go after 1 year with a change in coaches. Contrary to Barry's recommendation, the new HC brought in his own guy.

Seeing as how he was a 27 year old GA, no. Also Charlie Partridge is head coach at FAU. He was Bielema's DC at Wisconsin and Arky.

You'd think better schools would be clamoring for a quality OL coach given what WI does offensively. NMSU seems to be a peculiar place to go after being on a staff that went to the Rose Bowl the previous year. Perhaps it was a timing issue. It just seems odd.

Wasn't he a GA (less one game as interim) at WI and left to be the OL coach at NMSU. Makes sense to me.

According to his bio he was a QA coach for the O-line previously. I'll plead ignorance to not knowing if this is a paid position staff job or a GA position.

NMSU is a must stop for any coach. You have to take your opportunities to get some Aggie Vision exposure.

All I know is Alvarez wanted Andersen to keep Miller but he brought his own guy in from Utah State.

One has to wonder why bielema didn't bring him with in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all concerned about this hire, but that part left me scratching my head.

Miller did not start that season as Wisconsin's O-line coach. He was a GA. Bielema had just brought in a new OL coach who utterly failed with a different approach. For the first time in two decades Wiscy was having serious trouble running the football and pressure mounted (probably including from BA) to make a change. The change to make Miller the OL coach came about 4 weeks into the season and he turned the group around fairly quickly. Not sure why Bielema didn't take him to Arkansas but it may have something to do with the fact that he wasn't really Bielema's guy to begin with. For someone who was a GA and then essentially interim OL coach for part of a season, I don't see any issues with going to NMSU and FAU as next steps.

This post from TDG might help to clarify his coaching history and connections. This is not my info but posted in the comments section...

Miller was a GA at Wisconsin in 2011 and began as the GA in 2012. He had been brought to Wisconsin by his former coach (when he was a player), then the Wisconsin OL coach Bob Bostad. Bostad left Wisconsin when Paul Chryst (former Wis OC) left for Pittsburgh. Bostad is now in the NFL. Bielema hired a new OL coach out of the SEC for the 2012 season. However, two games into the season Wisconsin was 1-1 and averaging only 101yds a game and Bielema fired his brand new OL coach out of the SEC and hired Miller as the Interim OL coach, with instructions to re-install Bostad’s system. Miller did it, and Wisconsin posted the 1st, 2nd, and 4th best single game rushing performances in school history, including 542yds RUSHING against Nebraska in the 2012 Big Ten championship.

Bielema left after the 2012 season for Arkansas. Miller the returned to New Mexico State, where he had been a GA immediately prior to going to Wisconsin. Except rather than being hired as a TE coach, he was hired as the OL coach — dropping the "interim." Not bad for a twenty-something.

One year later, FAU hired Charlie Partridge as head coach. Interestingly enough, Partridge had been the DL coach at Wisconsin in 2012. So he hired the young guy he saw every day in practice for two years — including the 2012 season when Miller had to reassemble the OL mid-season. I’d say that was a vote of confidence.

Interestingly enough, Minnesota got a first hand look at Miller’s OL in 2012, when he coached at Wisconsin, and in 2013, when Minnesota played New Mexico State. So I’d say Coach Claeys is working a little bit on his own personal assessment having had to prepare and play against a Miller-coached OL.

Hope this clarifies some facts.

Thanks for sharing that. Good info.

Bielema was given a considerable amount of $ to assemble his coaching staff. He hired Randy Shannon as his LBer Coach, for example. He plucked the OL Coach from Tennessee (very thing he recently whined about having done to his staff this year)......Pittman.....who just got plucked away from them from Georgia by Kirby Smart. Pittman was one of best OL Coaches in all of SEC with good ties recruiting. It was an easy decision considering he was essentially given an "open checkbook" to assemble his staff.

Ah, this makes perfect sense -- especially the SEC recruiting angle. Good contribution...thanks, Buck.

I'm not as thrilled with the o coordinator hire but this one was a good one. Lost track a little on all the changes lately... Sawvel has been named def coordinator correct? Who is the dbacks coach or is that to be named yet or is jay still it?

Just saw the measures on the Stanford offensive line - 4 of 5 300 lbs or lower with height, good reach and quickness. And they're owning the Iowa d-line. I hope that's the direction the Gophers go and this guy coaches them up.

Brewster has also been coaching almost as long as Bart Miller has been alive, so they're not at all the same thing.

IMO, it is way more important to hire a OC/QB coach than a OC/OL coach. We should see a different in game approach next year.

Patrick Kasl seem like the type of lineman that fits into their system.
