This was a terrible week for the Big Ten. Michigan barely beats an Akron team. Wisconsin gets screwed but loses to ASU. Purdue loses to ND. Nebraska is beaten soundly by UCLA. Illinois gets taken down by Washington and finally PSU is schooled by Central Florida? Jeesh!

I know we live to root against Wisconsin, but it is clearly to the benefit of the U of M to have our conference brethren win these games.

But was there any bad news? I can live with this being a down year in the B1G.

Why? How would it benefit me as a Gopher fan if Penn St. beat Central Florida by 30 points as opposed to losing? On the contrary, it makes our win yesterday look that much better and gives more hope that they can win a few conference games.

This aint basketball...strength of schedule don't mean crap to teams that aren't going to play for the National Championship.

I only wish Iowa had lost to Iowa St. Then it would have been a more perfect Saturday!

Purdue losing didn't surprise me, I figured it would have been a blowout. I think the Gophers play against Western Illinois is looked at more of a negative than Purdue's loss to ND, at least nationally. Who cares though, we won and Wisky got screwed. Gotta love it.

I think Wisconsin didn't get screwed. The play Stave made placing the ball on the turf, should be a free ball. He was not down. You saw an Arizona State attempt to recover it. There was some confusion by the officials, and Wisconsin looked confused. They never lined up until it was too late. If Stave had rolled left and gone down, no problem. Whether they could have got the ball spiked and the field goal team on, is a question for Joe Tiller. Screwed, no unless you mean they screwed themselves.

I agree with you that it is to our benefit for other conference teams to win these games. Some people think conference perception is not important, but I believe it is a big part of recruiting. You read and listen to what a lot of kids say when they commit to almost any SEC school and they talk about how they wanted to play in the best conference. It helps to attract talent. The SEC is far ahead of everyone and it seems like the PAC 12 is the next tier followed closely by the B1G.

Definitely a bad day for the Big Ten. I'd argue there were 7 significant games yesterday offering at least a miniscule opportunity to get some cred:

Illinois (L) at home.
Iowa (W) on road.
Nebraska gets thumped at home.
Ohio State (W) easily.
Penn State (L) at home to a solid UCF squad.
Purdue (L) at home.
Wisconsin (L) on road.

And the 2 wins really aren't that impressive. An average Iowa team vs. an equally average ISU, and Ohio State should thump Cal and they did.

The Big Ten was 0-2 in the most significant games, losses by Nebraska and the Badgers.

The b1g sucks at football once again. Nothing new.

From what I saw in the replay Stave did take a knee, but it was so brief and his lineman was blocking the ref's line of sight, along with all the defender's too, that it created a bunch of confusion. No surprise they jumped on the ball. However, the play was blown dead after he set the ball on the ground so the refs should have immediately set the ball. They should have called a delay of game penalty on the D lineman. If they thought it was a fumble it should have been blown dead, ASU ball, and reviewed. Blame can go to all parties.

I completely understand your point of view and agree to a degree, but I openly root against some teams in the Big Ten because I can and it won't matter to the outcome anyways. I just can't bring myself to root for Wisc., Iowa, OSU, and Mich. (Unless they are playing Notre Dame). Go Akron - Go Iowa State - Go ASU - Go Cal., was what I was thinking to myself yesterday.

MN 1st, B1G teams 2nd (except for SIN-BAD), and then others similar to B1G schools. I like schools such as CAL, A&M, and Virginia. These are schools where you actually have to graduate from HS and pass your classes in college without someone else doing it for you. Then there are the ones I'll never cheer for like Oklahoma State and LSU. Lastly, there is ND.

Great logic.

absolutely agree. lack of a good national recognition can only hurt us in recruiting.

I'm more interested in the Gophers getting to another bowl game and continuing to improve. After this weeks games the path definitely looks easier. Right now in the B10 there are a bunch of teams with relatively new coaching staffs scrambling to get to the upper tier. The teams that can establish themselves will reap the recruiting benefits.

Well, I should clarify my statement and that would be that Wisconsin and Iowa are not part of that equation at all. I want to see them lose every time they take the field. I watched the end of the ASU-Becky game and even though Becky go hosed on the call, it was still a stupid play call. I really wish it was not a controversial call regarding the refs and the play clock, because I would rather see Becky lose without controversy. Otherwise, we need to listen to their fans whine about how they were the better team and got screwed by the officials, blah, blah, blah.

I get kind of excited when the other Big Ten teams lose games that they maybe shouldn't, because as a fan of a team spends more time near the bottom of the conference than the top, it gives me hope that maybe we can win a few more games. Michigan's four point win over Akron yesterday gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, a win is possible in Ann Arbor this year. Michigan State's apparent offensive ineptitude (I haven't watched them this year) means that maybe a couple of those special teams or defensive touchdowns we had the first two weeks could be enough to beat them.

A bad Big Ten means the Gophers can hopefully win more conference games. I'd probably rather see the Gophers at the top of a weak Big Ten than at the middle or bottom of a strong one.

+1

It should have been a recovered fumble: kudos to the ASU lineman who fell on the ball. He was smarter than the officials, coaches, and the QB who put it there.

Watched it a dozen times. His knee never even came close. There was no whistle. It was a fumble when he placed the ball on the ground.

Hand the ball to the refs Stave, you dufus. I have never seen a player do what he did and have it called "kneeling". If that had been a play at any other time in the game it would have been reviewed and called a fumble: clearly not down, clearly the ball on the ground, a clear recovery.

Highwayman, look at the picture. He did kneel, end of story, and he didn't need to anyway as all that has to occur is a kneeling motion for the play to end. I don't know why you are trying so hard to say that Becky didn't get jobbed, they did and that's what's so funny about the whole thing :)

Does the B1G ever have a good week anymore? I feel like we have one of these threads every week.

Agree. It barely feels like news when the B1G gets beat down in non conference play or bowl games. It is what we do in the B1G. Come on down Rutgers and Maryland.

I think that wis should never have been down there to begin with because the wis rb stepped out of bounds 20 yards before that but the refs did not mark the runner out of bounds. So the refs definitely bailed wis out there so Becky has nothing to complain about.
