Penalties
I wish we could dispel this myth that penalties equal poor coaching and lack of discipline. Really, every penalty and non-call is both a subjective determination by an official and/or group of officials with a call or non-call sometimes only happening after a huddle of officials. That's how fine of a line there is between an infraction and a good hit, tackle, block, motion, etc. If we were to lead the nation in personal fouls, taunting, game disqualifications, game suspensions, etc, then yes, the coaches would hold correctiable accountability. I know from playing football that if I was flagged for holding, block in the back, etc that 1. I never intended to commit the offense and the player knows better, - players don't go out to commit penalites - it happens. 2. The official actually saw it this time (many penalites are missed), or he saw something that wasn't even there but perceived by the response of the other players body. 3. And most importantly, I never once thought the coach could have coached me or any teamate into not being called for a penalty. Taunting and personal fouls are a separate category. These need to be looked at case-by-case.
