Why has this portion of the game nearly disappeared completely?

With all the bunnies missed in the college game today, you would think the coaches would ensure the boys "use the board". Teach it, practice it.

Even on wing shots, the board would be a good option.

Thoughts?

If you listen carefully, you can hear me yell "backboard" after every missed lay-up. I don't know how much longer my voice will last.

The "swisher" looks cooler, but the "board" is a shooter's best friend. Kids today only care about looking cooler.

Especially for Paul Carter ---! I hear you all the way down I 94 Dr Don!

Dr Don Kevorkian, I must admit you are right about the non-use of the backboard. Its just not cool. Maybe PBS should run a special to save "The American Backboard".

Maybe FOX should run "The Downfall of the American Backboard caused by the Obama Andministration" ..

Iverson needs to learn how to use it...I'm sick of his weak put back shots...go up strong and spank it off the glass for a duce kid.

I say if you are 3 feet from the Rim you be aggressive and dunk the ball...thats what my coaches told me....

Why will the coaches not DEMAND it?

Make it happen coaches.

Totally agree with you. The backboard shot has gone the way of underhanded free throws.

Tim Duncan has used the backboard his whole career and look who's going to go to the HOF.

That might not be far from the truth. After all, part of his economic recovery plan includes a backboard tax, just for those rich (those who make over 25K/Year) who use the backboard...

The first thing my coach when I was 10 years old taught me was, "The backboard is your friend"

Honestly, IMO missed layups have cost us big time this year. No one on our team is innocent....The one that sticks out in my mind, is the Carter miss in the Mich. State game (home) where he missed the dunk/layup and they immediately came down and scored. Is there anything more frustrating to watch.

As long as the youngsters of today do not want to use the backboard, let's remove it and play with an open rim.

I coached all my kids and was taught that if you can dunk the ball...move strong to the rim with the left or right reverse Pivot and Dunk the basketball........Iverson needs to learn the low post and is obviously struggling more than anyone else on this team.....

The thing is that Sampson and Iverson ALWAYS spin toward the middle of the floor. When you are straight on with the basket in the lane you never use the backboard. It doesn't make sense - if you use the backboard from a straight on shot you only make your shot longer. Nobody uses the backboard on free throws for this reason.

The backboard is perfect for shots from an angle. The only player who ever spins baseline to create that angle is DJ - and guess what, he uses the backboard.

As the guy drinking milk in my photo above would say........"It's Science."
