HUGE news for our conference opener!

Also, I figured it might be useful to have a general B1G thread.

Never want to see that happen.

Not sure an exclamation point is necessary when it's announced an opposing player is having back surgery. Hope he heals quickly.

Exclamation points don't mean excitement. As wikipedia explains, they generally mean "strong feelings" or "high volume." Mine was meant to be, "OMG - this was really unexpected and has a huge impact on our first big ten game."

Sounds like there is speculation that he'll be out the entire year.

Another example of a player losing money by returning to school. He would have been a lottery pick last year.

I hate to see this happen, especially to a kid who came back to college when he could have gone to the draft.

Certainly this will take some pressure off of our big men in the Big Ten opener.

Best of luck to Mitch on a full recovery.

Go Gophers!!

It sucks that this has to happen to such a hard-working player. I hope he comes back stronger than he was as a freshman. That being said, under unfortunate circumstances, this will help the Gophers substantially as that makes 2, possibly 3 games that are easier (but not easy) to win.

The loss of McGary will make Michigan rely even greater on the 3 pointer so gopher D will need to clamp down on the perimeter. It makes for an exciting opener!

McGary would have been a likely first rounder last year, not sure he would have made the lottery. When tested at the NBA combine i think he would have dropped. He is only average athletically, but pretty skilled for a freshman last year, reminded me a bit of Kevin Love.

Not to be "that guy", but looks like we really missed out on PF Nigel Hayes. He's been Becky's best player through the first half of the NW game tonight, and has gotten better and better thought it his freshman season.

He's definitely good, but no way he'd stay committed with the coaching change so I'm not all that upset about it.

Heard on local sports radio that Brandon Dawson broke his hand (by slamming it on a table...wtf?) and is out 4-5 weeks. HUGE loss for MSU.

Dawson is one kid Izzo has been unable to get through to. Very athletic and talented but for his talent level he disappears from games far, far too often. Big loss for Sparty. Quite often, as Dawson goes, so go the Spartans. He's that important. Problem is he's not a guy Izzo can count on to bring it night in & night out.

Mich and Iowa now co-favorites for Big Ten title?

Wouldn't go that far yet. If Sparty can split their next two vs. Michigan & Iowa and (presumably) get Payne back, they'll be fine. But if Payne remains out for awhile, agree, can't see Sparty winning a title with both not playing.

After I got home, I couldn't sleep right away, so I watched the first half of the Iowa/Michigan replay. Very good basketball both ways. My goodness, it was hard to watch that game and not think that these were the two best teams in the conference.

Not a good omen for Painter.

Doesn't he have a brother there too? So he's transferring and his brother is staying??

His brother Terone Johnson is a Senior. He's gone anyways. No relation to JaJuan Johnson (if that was a serious question)

Ronnie transferring is a bit surprising but not shockingly surprising from what I'm hearing. There is A LOT to this story and it's been a drama filled last 3 months behind closed doors for Matt Painter and his team. One of the many factors they went completely in the toilet after winning in Champaign in January and being 3-2 in conference play. Finished 2-12 the rest of the way.

Sad story about how parents are ruining sports for kids and in this case a D-I college athlete. The Johnson brothers father (Terone Sr.) was behind this movement from day one and has been actively shopping his kid to other schools. He met with Coach Painter around Christmas time and apparently that meeting did not go well and the writing has been on the wall ever since. The father was in prison during most of their HS careers and because of that was not very involved in the recruiting process. Upon his release from prison he has become a pain in the a$$ for coaching staff (ala Kris Humphries father) and from what I'm hearing Purdue is not all that distraught about RJ transferring. Losing your starting PG hurts but I guess it's an addition by subtraction thing. There is SO much more to this story - it's actually very, very pathetic.

Great news. Yogi should go too.

I'm a little depressed that Nigel Hayes doesn't seem to be considered much of a pro prospect. That guy is going to continue to piss me off for years.

Don't worry we'll have Josh Martin for the rest of Hayes' career. I think he'll be a pretty solid match up against him.

I feel the same way about the 5'11" Yogi Ferrell. Too bad he isn't a few inches taller.

Looks more like Tom Arnold in that photo.
