Last January a 24th ranked Michigan team led by three freshmen traveled to Williams Arena to meet 23rd ranked Minnesota. The freshman trio delivered as advertised wresting the lead from the Gophers at the start of the fourth quarter and holding on for a Maize and Blue 70-65 victory.’
For the Wolverines the three freshmen guards were 6’1” Olivia Olson with 19 points and 8 rebounds: 5’10’ Syla Swords with 20 points and 6’0” Mila Holloway with 12 points and 5 assists.
Minnesota’s three double digit scorers were Amaya Battle (25 points and 6 assists in 40 minutes), Grace Gocholski (12 points and 6 rebounds in 38 minutes) and Annika Stewart with 16 points in 17 minutes.
Michigan finished the Big Ten season 11-7 tied with Illinois and Michigan State for fifth. It was good for an NCAA trip where the Wolverines defeated Iowa State before losing to Notre Dame.
This season’s torrid start included racing past Notre Dame 93-54 (which pretty much matched Michigan’s non-conference winning margins). The notable exception to blow out wins being UConn who defeated the Wolverines 69-72.
Michigan opened the B1G season with a 104-56 beat down of Purdue before stumbling to a 2 OT victory over Oregon 92-87 and a 52-64 loss at Washington. Both the Ducks and the Huskies were able to shut down the passing lanes with some aggressive defense and frustrate the Wolverines away from transition basketball.
Any plan to frustrate Michigan begins with disrupting the three freshmen who are now sophomores anxious to get the Wolverines back on track.
