Last January a 24th ranked Michigan team led by three freshmen traveled to Williams Arena to meet 23rd ranked Minnesota. The freshman trio delivered as advertised wresting the lead from the Gophers at the start of the fourth quarter and holding on for a Maize and Blue 70-65 victory.’

For the Wolverines the three freshmen guards were 6’1” Olivia Olson with 19 points and 8 rebounds: 5’10’ Syla Swords with 20 points and 6’0” Mila Holloway with 12 points and 5 assists.

Minnesota’s three double digit scorers were Amaya Battle (25 points and 6 assists in 40 minutes), Grace Gocholski (12 points and 6 rebounds in 38 minutes) and Annika Stewart with 16 points in 17 minutes.

Michigan finished the Big Ten season 11-7 tied with Illinois and Michigan State for fifth. It was good for an NCAA trip where the Wolverines defeated Iowa State before losing to Notre Dame.

This season’s torrid start included racing past Notre Dame 93-54 (which pretty much matched Michigan’s non-conference winning margins). The notable exception to blow out wins being UConn who defeated the Wolverines 69-72.

Michigan opened the B1G season with a 104-56 beat down of Purdue before stumbling to a 2 OT victory over Oregon 92-87 and a 52-64 loss at Washington. Both the Ducks and the Huskies were able to shut down the passing lanes with some aggressive defense and frustrate the Wolverines away from transition basketball.

Any plan to frustrate Michigan begins with disrupting the three freshmen who are now sophomores anxious to get the Wolverines back on track.

BIG TEN STATS

Olivia Olson: 18,0 points and 6.3 rebounds in 38 minutes

Syla Swords: 16.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 37.7 minutes

Mila Holloway 9 points and 2 rebounds in 26.7 minutes

I think the Gophers should keep this close. I think they match up fairly well with Michigan.. UCLA is the only team that scares me..

Hope you are right. We need more balanced scoring tonight n Hart needs a good game. UCLA looks like the team that most Big teams will have difficulty beating. Go Gophers!

First four minutes is very important. Can't let Michigan get comfortable and get out to a big lead. Have to be ready for the pressure.

Will tonight finally be the night we get a top #25 win?

Yes it’s been a long time since they have had a top 25 win, especially on the road. They cannot start out missing layups and shots around the rim. Hoping Braun has a good game shooting the ball and that Battle continues her hot streak. They’ve had a week to prepare and game plan. Let’s hope it works! Go Gophers!

Hoping GG, Mara and all the experienced players can replicate the great performance the last time the Gophers played at Michigan in 2024. GG went 5 for 9 from 3, Mara went 4 for 9 from 3, and Mallory Heyer went 6 for 9 from 3. Altogether, the Gophers shot 15 for 28 from 3, and the Gophers walked away with their only BIG road victory of the 23-24 season. Probably the best Gophers road victory of the last 5+ years.

Pressure, handling the pressure.

Michigan offense is not impressive. Must depend on transition points more than MN.

So happy seeing Mara connect, Gopher defense has been solid. Some uncharacteristic turnovers in the first quarter but Michigan defense has been solid as well.

If there's 3 yellow and 2 maroon in the backcourt then there should be someone unattended that can run to the ball

Night and day athleticism after watching Duke games with their tall lineup vs this gophers one

Disgusting, 22-11 lead shortly after the quarter starts and about to give it all back if they make free throws.

Ugh! Another TO back breaker. Gophers in a little bit of foul trouble. I wonder when Braun comes in if they should use her to break the press. Tori and Amya ‘s passes have been nerve racking at best. They weren’t able to set up any offense once they got over the timeline.
