B1G coaches' tournament: Bierman -vs- Alvarez

Alvarez will win because very few of the people voting in this were around for Bierman and most will only have his resume to go on whereas Barry is still a very visible figure at Wisconsin and the Big Ten. Bierman will get the Minnesota votes but nationally I would think most will side with Barry.

This whole "tournament" is an absolute joke. I know what their idiotic parameters are, but Tom Osborne never coached a game in the Big Ten. Second, and more importantly, any discussion of Big Ten football coaches that doesn't have Bierman, Yost, and Stagg as seeds 1, 2, and 3 (in some order) is a farce from the beginning. Schembechler as a 2 seed? Give me a break.

Henry Williams ought to be on that list too. The silliness of these type of games is compounded by recentism. And couldn't they be bothered to find the logo for the University of Chicago to put by Stagg's name?

They forgot to mention Wisconsin's national championships.

Of course it's all a joke. All of college athletics is a joke - what does any of it have to do with the institutions' academic purpose?

But it's fun, and this exercise is supposed to be fun. Quit trying to suck all the fun out of the room.

I would like for Barry Alvarez to coach a bunch of pussies before the helmets with face guards became required equipment.

The resume should be more than enough. Coach Bierman won 5 NATIONAL TITLES. He is the only coach in the history of CFB to win 3 consecutive National Championships. He also won another while playing for Minnesota.

Does Barry have half a dozen National Titles? No. This shouldn't be close.

You can right click the link above and choose "open link in incognito window" and vote as many times as you like. But you have to close the window each time to re-vote.

Its ridiculous that a coach with no national titles is even in the same discussion as one with 5.

No Surprise IF You Know History

College football was invented in 1993, in Madison, WI, by Pat Richter and Barry Alvarez (with help from one, Donna Shalala).

Jeesh, c'mon . . . everyone knows that.

Doubt it? Just ask any 'Sconnie fan.

bump. have you clicked on the espn link in the OP and submitted your vote(s) for bernie bierman yet? do your part gopher fans. :)

I voted... based on the resumes, the vote shouldn't even be close, let alone a landslide in Barry's favor.

The tournament might be fun if you had blind resumes.

Here's a fun one:

Bie**** and Bie**** both coached in the Big Ten.

One of them won 72.6% of his games coached while a B10 team's coach and one won 73.9% as a coach with a team in the B10.

Here's another "fun one":

The B***les and The B***les both had success in the pop/rock recording industry. One featured female performers and some top 40 hits. The other featured 4 young lads from Liverpool that also had "some" success.

Which of those blind resumes has multiple national championships, and which one has a winning percentage padded with games against Northern Iowa and South Dakota?

Agreed there was padding of wins for one of them, but for the other the National Championship process and ease was not what it is today.

Absolutely. I'd have voted Bierman but taking out the "Saban cheats" chants, if he wins 5, I think that's much more impressive than what existed in the 40s...especially because there were multiple champs in most of those seasons.

Of course, Alvarez won none so the vote should still be Bierman but those titles hold a little less weight stacked up against some of the guys from today.
