Average RPI since 2000 (BCS schools only)

This is one of seven criteria I use to rank all 73 BCS programs. With the completion of the 2008-09 season, this is now a decade's worth of RPI data. I'll have my "Program of the Decade" for you in a few weeks, until then I'll post updates on a few of the more pertinent criteria (record vs. NCAA qualifiers, NCAA winning percentage, NCAA appearances, Finals Fours, etc.). Coming into this past season, Kansas was at the top of my rankings.

I've been amazed by how much the Gopher & Michigan programs have mirrored one another over the last decade. Very medicore programs with very medicore coaches (Ellerbe, Amaker, Monson) & both with recent checkered pasts. It finally appears both programs have the right coach in place. Tubby and Beilein have invigorated their fan bases (ours to a greater extent), while at the same time getting their programs to the NCAA in just their second season.

SS-Is a jump of 8 in one year a large amount for one team? Could you put this in persective on what an average jump would be for the biggest gainers in a year. Same with a fall?

I also have a similar question as mnboiler's. Is the difference, rise of fall, measured from the RPI at a specific year and that of the next? Or, from the "average" RPI at one year and that of the next?

To answer your questions. ... +8 is a significant jump. Most teams that move up (i.e the Gophers) only improve by a couple spots. Teams that drop more than 3 spots is pretty significant.

I measure the jump or fall based on their standing from the previous season. For example, Purdue was #50 (based on average RPI) heading into this past season. Now the Boilers have the "42nd best" average RPI since 2000. It's not about how much a team's average RPI improved or dropped, it's their standing relative to the other 72 BCS programs. Hope that makes sense.
