Auburn freshman Jakell Mitchell killed in shooting

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn freshman football player Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed early Sunday morning at an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus.

The Auburn Police Department is investigating and developing leads as it searches for a suspect.

Police responded to a call from the Tiger Lodge apartment complex at 12:25 a.m., where Mitchell suffered a fatal injury, Auburn police Capt. Will Mathews told AL.com.

I remember when a Gopher player (can't remember the name) died of a gunshot wound in downtown Minneapolis either late in the Wacker era or early in the Mason era. Just sad.

​MINNEAPOLIS -- The man convicted of killing Minnesota football player Brandon Hall was sentenced Thursday to more than 35 years in prison.Jermaine Stansberry, 29, was convicted in July of second-degree murder and other charges in the shooting of Hall, a defensive lineman from Detroit, who was killed just hours after playing in his first college game.

Hall, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, made one tackle in Minnesota's season opener Aug. 31, 2002, a 42-0 victory over Southwest Texas State.

Later that night, the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder was among some Minnesota players who went to the aid of former player Damian Haye, who had just been robbed by
Stansberry in downtown Minneapolis.

Hall was gunned down in the ensuing confrontation around 2 a.m.

Besides second-degree murder, the jury also found Stansberry guilty of first-degree aggravated robbery and being a felon in possession of a weapon. Police found Haye's gold necklace in Stansberry's pocket after his arrest.
