I’ve always liked the maroon and gold look. I’m an especially big fan of the flat finish on the helmets. I still, however, cannot look at these uniforms without thinking of the old sitcom “Coach.” I’d personally like to see an actual gopher on the helmet.

They were actually the 1993 Gophers uniforms colorized to purple. The bowl footage is the Gophers vs Wisconsin 1993 game.

In real life, Florida State won the national championship that season. The Alamodome opened in May 1993, in time for the real-life 1993 football season. However, the first Alamo Bowl and Pioneer Bowl games had not been played yet. Also, the real-life Pioneer Bowl is not even an NCAA Division I game but rather a postseason game played between the champions of two Division II conferences whose members are all historically black schools. Or...traditional colors excellent, anything with Penn State pants hideous!

I don't remember the exact footage from that episode of "Coach," but I'm guessing that Wikipedia entry is incorrect. The Gophers were wearing the metallic gold in 1993. IIRC, the footage they used in that show was always a late-80s Gophers-Wisky game, and they would change the opponent's name to reflect the W on Wisky's helmets ("West Texas", or "Wranglers," etc.).

Not really, Wisconsin & Nebraska sell out large stadia and have uniforms ranked below Minnesota. The one I don't get is Northwestern. Than N is not very good looking.

Using my rudimentary excel skills I made this chart. Stadium capacity on the vertical axis, uniform ranking on the horizontal. Not much correlation aside from the top 3 (which, coincidentally, have great unis)

I know I'm biased but the new Gopher uniforms are way better than 9th! The combinations are awesome! I love the Gold helmet with Maroon Jerseys and Gold pants! But so many combos are sweet! Hard to find uniforms I like better in the Big Ten. Love the solid, bold colors!

Anything except gold/white is pretty awesome, in my book.

The only reason we are ranked so low is team popularity and because they always vote for tradition. We change ours.
