Three Golden Gophers have received All-America honors from Athlon Sports. Maxx Williams was named to Athlon's third team, while David Cobb and Peter Mortell made the fourth team.
Williams, who made Athlon's Freshman All-America Third Team last year, was earlier named to 2014 All-America second teams by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and CBS Sports. The redshirt sophomore tight end was a John Mackey Award finalist, a Capital One Academic All-American and the Big Ten Tight End of the Year. Williams led Minnesota in receptions (29), receiving yards (471) and receiving touchdowns (7) during the regular season.
Cobb earned All-Big Ten Second Team acclaim after breaking Minnesota's single-season rushing record as a senior. He has 1,545 yards and 10 touchdowns with one game left to increase those totals. Cobb has posted seven games with 100-plus rushing yards this season, tied for second-most in a season in school history.
Mortell was named the Big Ten Punter of the Year, leading the conference in punting average as a redshirt junior. His 45.5-yard average ranks second in Gophers history for a season. Mortell is the first Minnesota punter to earn a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team.
