is there anyone on this board who knows why the Wisconsin Athletic department is so far ahead of Minnesota in so many key performance indicators?

Look at measures that involve Wins, fund raising, academic success, National University rankings, general public perception/national exposure, fiscal solvency, etc. What will it take for Minneota to be able to compete vs schools like Wisconsin and OSU?

Probably a commitment to winning and selling out other things for the athletic department. Not saying I think it is a good or bad thing, but I believe MN has much more support for non-revenue sports than Wisky.

Gopherbadgerman...I agree with you but how does a University define comitment to winng? When I have talked to JM, he says he is committed to Winning, all the administration and coaches say they are commited to winning, so how does a University put words into action? I think coach Kill can coach, I think Tubby can recruit, but what sets Wisconsin apart? What sets OSU apart? Everyone wants to win. Minnesota has been loserville for so long, it seems that people are happy to settle. How can we break the cycle? What has to change at the University to enable that cultural shift? It is the only full serviced D1 school in the state. Maybe a dose of competiton would help?

I am perplexed, I am on record as saying that maturi is over-matched and should leave ASAP. However, would that be enough? is Minnesota destined to mediocrity? What motivation does the U of M have to be best of breed in anything Athletics?

Let's see, TCF was made to expand to 80,000. TCF presently seats 50,000=net gain of 30,000.

30,000 seats x $60=1.8 mill per game x 7 games = 12.6 mill yearly.(not to mention extra concessions, suites, merchandise etc). That's a lot of bucks.

So we don't have to look all over the internet for these statistics, can you post them? As far as successful athletic departments, the Director's cup has us both top 25 (MN - 18, WI - 21).

The links below might help document the value of having a solid athletic program. I do not think there is any statistical correlation I can find between College and University rankings and Sports success. However, common sense would tell me that a healthy sports program and the exposure gained on a National scale can help to promote and market the strengths of a University. Also, from a business aspect, the revenues generated by football and basketball add real Value in monetary terms to the University. See Forbes below, Wisconsin in mentioned along with the other Major programs. Minnesota has no mention in the report. Also, a self funding Athletic department puts less strain on the rest of the University system, especially one that depends on Tax dollars to fund their operations. Isn't this just common sense???

Would you trade a ranking in the Directors cup for a mens BB final four, FB BCS national Championship or rose bowl? I think 90 percent of Minnesotans don't know or care about our Directors Cup success. They would opt for a chance at a Final 4 and a rose bowl every time.
