Can we get some strong, athletic bigs in this program? Watching the bigs from Syracuse, Texas, and Kansas State tonight has made me envious. Whether it is Onawaku & Jackson from Syracuse, James & Pittman from Texas, or Kelly & Samuels from K-State, I've seen the formula for a top 10 team.
It isn't 6'11 wiry soft guys like Sampson, Iverson, or Eliason who will elevate this program. We need strong, athletic bigs who can be physical and rebound inside. Getting 6'8 guys with hops and strength are all you need. We don't need the 7-footers. This is college, not the NBA.
What's even worse is that not only are Sampson and Iverson soft, but offensively they don't handle the ball well, can't run on the fast break, and have a tough time finishing on offense in the post. It is the worst of both worlds. Sampson is a decent free throw shooter, and that's about it.
I know Sampson had some points against Indiana, but forget about IU here. This isn't about the one game against IU. Sampson and Iverson have no chance against teams like Michigan State and Purdue, much less any of the teams mentioned above.
And while they might get marginally better, after two years Sampson and Iverson aren't all of a sudden going to become dominant inside next year, or the year after. They just aren't, no matter how much we need them to be.
