OK, let's admit. Al at point is a bigger factor than we ever thought. He is gone (for now?) and when Blake plays there (has to) we lose the fast break where he could beat others down the court and have open three's. That is over. That's the breaks. Maybe next year we have a real point guard, but when DJ left and then Al went out....that was all she wrote. Blake had great entry passes from the wing, but he is really struggling from the top.
I watched Texas play the other night and Cory J is a real point guard. For a freshman he is outstanding and really highlighted what a point guard does with four other strong players on the floor. I so wish we had someone like him, but we don't. Probably to his credit he stayed away from his brother. He distributed the ball and ran the team. He took one open shot from the top of the key and promptly took a seat on the bench.
So, we do not have an experienced point guard. That means the 8 players we do have are going to have to play with the intensity that we have seen from Indiana and Iowa. With the loss of DJ and then Al, it seems the air went out of the bag. Did you see Blake's response when he missed 2 free throws last night? He looked disgusted to me. The players complain about foul calls ( and no calls) and stand around to see if someone else is going to do something.
Tubby can coach and cajole and stare. If the players don't do a gut-check and play 40 minutes, we'll be talking about more "painful" losses. I hope they answer the bell.
