Article about UNLV player

They have high hopes for this guy - nice offer list. Holloway appears to potentially be a good player, but one of UNLV's top returning running backs (Bradford) has left school. There are very few scenarios where I see the Gophers losing this game. http://www.lvrj.com/sports/rebels-h...ay-flourishes-at-defensive-end-144335815.html

Here are your very few scenarios:

We fumble the ball away a few times. We throw a few picks. We get a few punts and/or field goals blocked. And even then, it'll be close. We're gonna win!

Go Gophers!

Famous last words.

I don't gamble with anything of significance, but if I did, I would've bet everything I owned that the Gophers wouldn't lose against NMSU last year (at home, natch) and look how that turned out. The fact that the Gophers will probably be 2-3 TD favorites, and that it will be the first game of the year, and that it will be in the desert (above-average humidity guaranteed?), all make me way more unsettled about this game than I should be.

Amen. I really think the Gophers should win, and I will be disappointed if they don't win, that doesn't mean they will win. Besides NMSU, there are several other games the Gophers had no business losing but managed to pull it off. Yes previous regimes and players, but until that culture of underachieving is fully broken, it's the elephant that still hasn't left the room that no one likes to talk about. So I am cautiously optimistic. I will bet a reasonable amount that I can afford to lose and hope for a few free beers out of the deal!

Absolutely. I did not write that there were no scenarios that would result in a Gopher loss. You have named a couple of them. One of the others is that UNLV plays an incredible game. I've been a UNLV season ticket holder for 11 years and about once a year they play a great game. Last year they played well and handled an OK Hawaii team and the next week were putrid vs. Southern Utah and lost. "There are no certainties in this world, only opportunities." - Douglas MacArthur

We have a way of losing to teams we shouldn't. Dpodoll alluded to it with the NMSU game. I thought there was no way in hell we were going to lose that game. We had just come off a great showing at USC and NMSU had just come off a shellacking at the hands of Ohio. NMSU has one of the worst programs in all of college football. Sometimes I still ponder how we managed to lose that game (other than no pass rush, no defense, and going to the red-zone a couple times with no points to show for it). For that reason, I cannot say we will win at UNLV.

I dug up some notes on the sacks for and against last year. In the first 5 games, the Gophers had only two sacks, while they gave up 14. But in the final seven games, the Gophers had 17 sacks and gave up only 8. It looks like it took a while for the players to really learn the system. If the Gophers can keep up this progression, and play like they did in the second half of last season, we should be OK. Anything can happen, of course. One thing the Gophers have to do this season is to show that they can win the games they are supposed to win.
