I was just watching Channel 5 news and they had a short segment where Carlson said if we're going to compete in the new Big Ten we need top-notch coach. The anchor (McClean?) went onto say that Carlson said Brewster shouldn't be fired right now, but that there should be a full review of the program at the end of the season.

This is the kind of attention needed to shake up the powers that be at the U.

Wow. As former Gov. Arne knows darn well he can't just go off half-cocked to the media, so some thought must have gone into that statement. Wonder if there's more talk swirling than we are privy to...

Did Jesse "the Mind" Ventura have an opinion?

We won't have time to do a full review after the season, the best candidates will have been snagged up. As the season progresses, the U will have to review, but at the end of the last game, their minds should be made up.

I'd say even before then. Unless we're in the midst of quite a turnaround, I doubt there is much Brew can do to push the decision off to the Iowa game. Frankly, they should have a plan in place by the bye week. Otherwise he should be coming back. This piddling around they did with Mase and at the end of last season CANNOT happen again. Hopefully getting called out publicly by so many sources will help knock that idea into the decision maker's heads.

Remember it wasn't quite a year ago that Reusse said the U's administration all understood that Brewster would be gone. That was a memorable statement from Pat, who is not a gossiper.

I remember as him saying something about how they'd like to have fired him last year, but they didn't want to buy out his contract. Brewster rolled the dice on his contract and looks like the U finally won.

If $200,000 is the difference in what the boosters will come up with to can a coach, there are larger problems than coaching.

Arne hasn't been in the news in awhile. He lives in Florida. He obviously needed a little attention so he figured he'd get involved in the governor's race. His little rant about the Gophers got him what he wanted: media attention.
Regardless of what's happening with the football program, old Arne's opinion has no more value than any on this message board.

I think you win for most misinformed post of the day. Congrats!

How is that misinformed? Are you some type of "insider" like so many on the internet like to call themselves? Arne is not a big financial backer of the U like a Dick Ames,; he doesn't sit on the Board of Regents; he doesn't live in state; and he no longer holds any political office. Why would you think he holds any more sway over the powers that be than most other alumni?

I think you just nominated yourself for oblivously misinformed post of the week if you don't think the former governors statement on a network news channel doesn't hold more sway than a bunch of us posting on a fan site that is basically only read by the people that post on it.

*Confused*

Maroon was ripping the dude for suggesting Carlson's statement was no more influential than what we rubes say here. He wasn't making that statement himself.

Duh, strike that, reverse it. My bad I misread the whole thing.

Do you honestly think he doesn't have friends that trust and listen to him and trust him? Friends that a big wigs in the state and within the university community as well. Not many politicians get elected without big money influential friends.

Are you Arne Carlson, GopherGod?

Exactly, apparently spending retirement in Florida precludes a person from being a fan or at all connected to the U of M program. I guarantee that most of the major backers of U of M sports forked over a bundle to Arne in his time as a popular governor. He has always been known as a major backer of U of M athletics and just because you (Kopco) perceive him to be less connected does not make it true.

Bango! There's probably a couple of dozen fatcat boosters/alums who can decide Brewster's fate with one phone conference. In fact, I'd bet that Maturi has been working the phones ever since Saturday afternoon. Joel may have royally screwed the pooch on the coaching hire, but doing the backchannel stuff is what he does best.

Arne might be the one. If you recall, he was running as an independent after failing to get the IR endorsement in a year in which anybody would have beaten Goofy Rudy Perpich. And then the Gods smiled on Arne and sent John Grunseth for a swim with a teenage girl.

Agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, this is Maturi we're talking about. Piddling around is what he does and does well. Like Brewster, he's bent over backwards trying to convince everybody that things with the football program are going well despite clear evidence to the contrary. In other words, he (much like the football coach he hired) have no idea what they're doing and where the program truly is at the moment.

I can guarantee you that there are dozens, if not hundreds, of boosters who have a much bigger voice in U of M athletics than Arne. Its all about the dollar signs and Arne doesn't have enough of them nor does he donate a fraction of what most of these people do (Can you help me out and point out his name on the donation wall at TCF? I've looked at it several times and have never noticed his name among the many, many names there. Maybe I just missed it.). Also, because you perceive that he does have major influence also does not make it true. By the way, if any of these people "forked over a bundle" to Arne while he was governor, both Arne and these people would still be in prison.

Well, this would be a great point if you didn't have the details wrong. The U will owe him $200,000 PER YEAR for the remaining years on the contract. So that's $600,000. Not the highest total ever (yet not chump change either), but its HALF of what they would have owed under the previous contract.

That Grunseth thing made for some great Halloween costumes that year!
