per FootballScoop:

"Arkansas: Petrino will average $3.56 million per year in his new deal that runs through 2017. Here are the buyout totals per year: $18 million, $18 million, $17.95 million, $14.525 million, $10.825 million, $7.375 million and $3.925 million. There is also a no-compete clause where Petrino has agreed not to seek employment at any other SEC school."

Go Gophers!!

I think with the big deals coaches are getting now a days...we will see more like this with exclusions from going to a competitor and big big buy outs for leaving...if schools have to guarantee big bucks...they will lock in their guy as well.

A two edged sword. It protects the school from their coach leaving, but it probably means that they go over the cliff if the things go wrong with the coach.

True...but these top coaches are demanding big $$$ guaranteed...so the schools on the hook no matter what...might as well protect yourselves from bigger conference schools poaching your talent. Call it the scUM/tOSU clause in the contract.

I admittedly don't know jack about the economics of Arkansas or the SEC, but those buyouts seem gigantic. If a guy who didn't enjoy coaching that much and didn't have a ton of scruples got a deal like that, he could just put his feet up on his desk and watch a team be destroyed while he waited for his retirement slip.

They better hope he doesn't fail. I don't know how I feel about that big of buyout it certainly shows they both have faith in him and are paranoid
