what good special teams we will have next year?

Punt Returns - You'll see next year Sherels will have a very good year returning punts and will be one of the best in the Big Ten.

Kickoffs - Iowa fans at the game commented on how good of a return person Stoudermire is. Next year he'll be one of the best in the Big Ten. He was the only bright spot in that game by the way.

We'll have two of the best return men in the Big Ten.

Kicking and Punting - On special teams this is the only area I'm worried about. I heard Ellestad has a strong leg so he should be able to kick it deep on kickoffs. Field goals and punts I think we'll get it figured out by Ellestad, new recruit, and the walk-ons.

I think the special teams will be special on returns and solid in the kicking game.

Whoa there Tiger

Are people finally beggining to realize what good special teams we will have next year?

Then you wrote:

Field goal kicking - unknown
Kickoff depth / height - unknown
Punting - unknown
Kickoff & punt coverage - highly dependent on above
Long-snapping - returns with no obvious problems in 2008
Kickoff returns - high expections
Punt returns - focus on catching the ball first then we'll talk

So to summarize: We don't have any fricken' clue how good or bad we could be on special teams other than Brewster always makes it a point of emphasis and the better athletes we bring in the better the coverage and return units tend to be.

Have you considered piracy? You'd make a great Dread Pirate Roberts......

Montoya

We had problems on punt returns because, Sherels was hurt, that's when we struggled catching the ball. With Sherels healthy, we will be very good on punt returns.

Obviously I'm focusing on the kickers and return men. Brewster always has good players in coverage and blocking.

Yeah, I do have some idea how they will do. We WILL be special on returns and solid in the kicking game.

Based on whom kicking will we have a solid kicking game? I'm finally beginning to realize you are pulling these predictions out of thin air.

What to actually look forward to on special teams

This is just funny.

Since nobody has seen the punter or kicker I think you are better off to talk about how good the punt and kick coverage will be. To me the thing that was most evident about the impact the '08 recruiting class had on the team was on our special forces (I'll appease Brewster by using his monikers) coverage teams. There was dramatic improvement on team speed and that is going to happen again in 2009 when you add Lewis & Watkins (assuming they don't redshirt) to the special teams, if Leon signs you likely put Theret in a back up role and a prominent place on kick coverage and we have Royston on coverage too.

Punt Returns:
Mark my words, Sherels is not going to be our punt returner next season. He has adequate quickness and lateral agility but I wouldn't consider him a game breaker at punt returner. In this class we are adding 2 dynamic players that can be game breakers. Hayo Carpenter and Bryant Allen will compete for the role. If you don't believe me on this go watch their film. Carpenter was a dominant punt returner in the Cal Juco system and Allen is tailor made for the position. I'll predict it for the Juco transfer but it could go either way.

Kick Returns:
My guess is that we still have Stoudermire and Jay Thomas back deep returning because it was a great line up this season. Allen or Carpenter will compete with Stoudermire for the position but it is Troy's to lose after being the Kick Returner on the All Freshman Big Ten team (ESPN, Rivals, etc). Jay Thomas will keep his spot because Stoudermire is the featured returner and Thomas is his lead blocker which he is better at than Allen or Carpenter would be.

Kicker/Punter
K: Ellestad--I have no idea what to think other than he was Monroe's back up this season and he never saw the field. It is hard to anticipate improvement.
P: Orseske--His film looks good but we'll have to wait until we see him on campus to know what to think.

And the return of the Special Team Player of the Year

Fastest player at 10 yards, Nate Triplett.

Fastest player at 10 yards, Nate Triplett.

And what does that do on special teams? Punt or kick coverage means sprinting 50-70 yards. That speed is great at linebacker, but not on special teams.

This is just funny.

(I'll appease Brewster by using his monikers) coverage teams.

Grunk...think much of yourself?

I am certain that Brewster doesn't care what you call special teams...he certainly doesn't need your appeasement like it was some sort of negotiation.

No, I don't have a big head. I was just having some fun with calling it "special forces" which I laugh at every time I hear it.

I'm with you on that one grunkeijr. Brewster can call special teams what he wants. All I care is they do a good job which they did ranking well in Big Ten special categories.

Triplett. If you watch the KO coverage, he was almost always one of the first Gophers on the scene. I believe he was named Most Valuable Special Team ( oops, I mean Forces) player.

Who knows how they will fare in 09 with a unproven kicker and punter.

Yho Schlic Daddy

Being the fastest in 10 yards, you are exploding and Nate ran a 4.47 in high school. He was a running back, and not only burst through the line, but found that fifth gear and pulled away. If you watched Nate closer you will find him on the hail mary defense as well. He has the ability to get deep on pass coverage. If you go to the tape you will see him on the goal line on a fourty, fifty yard pass. He has wheels and leads the special forces. When it was brought up about lean muscle mass, he was also a leader. His body fat coming out of high school was between 7 and 8 percent. That is what the coaching staff wants at corner.
