They both picked Nebraska to win the Big Ten West. I really don't get all the love Nebraska is getting heading into the season. Lost Abdullah and Bell. 1st year coach. Have gotten absolutely bitch slapped by wi of late. Lost to MN at home last year and got worked pretty good by us at TCF 2 years ago. I hope wi and MN paste neb. this year. Guess people are giving Mike Riley a ton of credit.

Why do people get so worked up about this stuff. It's an opinion. Not everyone has to pick Minnesota to go to the Rose Bowl.

I don't know that he was getting all worked up. It seems to me he presented some rational counter-arguments.

I think their predictions in favor of Nebraska are based on their belief that Mike Riley is going to get the Nebraska players to perform better.
Riley is a good coach, but I don't think his history suggests some big turnaround is coming to Lincoln.
I'd be surprised if they beat Michigan St, and expect them to lose a west division game or two. I'll guess they finish 9-3. Again.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. Mine? Mike Riley is a highly overrated coach, he did a rather mediocre job at Oregon State, I doubt they challenge for the Big Ten West title.

You have to smoke crack to think Nebraska can't go 6-2 with this schedule?

Agreed, I heard them say they thought Nebraska was the most talented in the West also.

I'm good with the Gophers getting no love, and I bet the coaches are too. Jay Sawvel mentioned on the podcast: these coaches, these players, they are used to being told they aren't very talented, a bunch of try-hards. They relish having that chip on their shoulder. The way I look at it, the more "disrespect" the better, that's just more motivation for our team to go push their opponents sh!t in.

Part of their reasoning for Nebraska was that they get Wiscy at home. If I'm pulling off my homer glasses, I'd pick Wiscy over Nebraska every day of the week and twice on Saturday. Despite the coaching change, Wiscy is much more stable than Nebraska.

Until Minnesota wins the West, Dinardo will predict a previous winner. Once the Gophs win, they will become eligible to be predicted to win.

Well, they did visit every program and watched them. I think we forget that we lost our 2 biggest playmakers on offense and our defensive leader on defense and they were NFL caliber players. NE has the best talent in the West and if you believe Riley is a better coach than Pelini and will get more out of the talent assembled in NE it is really not a stretch. It is not as if the cupboard is bare in NE.

Ameer Abdullah Round 2 Detroit Lions
Kenny Bell Round 5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Randy Gregory Round 2 Dallas Cowboys

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I'm not getting the Nebraska love either. They have said that they thought Nebraska was the most talented team in the West. However; I'm not sold on Riley being better than Pelini.

Maybe they think Riley and Chryst will step in like Urban did at tOSU. On the show they both said they base their opinions on the fact those teams have the easier cross over games. All three play Rutgers and only Nebraska has a tough cross over game in Michigan St.

And? Everyone loses people every year. We just assume that our guys are better and that the analysts that actually went and watched every team in person are nuts for analyzing the talent and saying someone else will be better than us based strictly on a talent level. I also think they believe, as do I, that Pelini was a crappy coach and that Riley, with very good talent, is going to have NE playing better.

I don’t get it either. As stated by UU, Nebraska lost their most talented players too, as did Wisconsin. How can anyone simply say we lost Maxx and Cobb, so we have holes to fill? Everyone does! As far as this cross-over business goes, isn’t the West Division standings put together on only West Division games, and then head-to-head? If so, then why make such a bid deal over the cross-over games? Who cares if we lose to OSU and Mich… as long as we win head-to-head our West Division record would still win out.

And know body can tell me that the losses for Nebraska and Wisconsin weren’t just as significant as ours… I would argue that they are more significant. And the Iowa pick is just BS.

No, they include all Big Ten games in the standings.

But what did Gerry think of Nebraska's chances against "match-up opponents?"

No surprise that fan bases always overestimate their team's talent compared to the other teams in the conference. Or in this case the division.

Mike Riley is a really good coach.

Agree that Nebraska will be a tough out based on talent and coaching.

I don't know how to look this up or I would post statistics: How many coaches come in to a team with a winning record and win more games than the coach they replaced? My gut would tell me not a lot (though I don't have data), especially a 9 win team.

I'm not questioning whether Nebraska has any talent, I'm sure they do. Is it the right talent for the new schemes? Have the players learned the new schemes? Will Riley's players (true freshmen) be forced into play before they're ready?

We'll see what happens at the end of the year. I will say I definitely think a lot of fans are overlooking them simply because the Gophers beat them two years in a row.

Regardless, I think this year is a lot harder to pick with new coaches in Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Two coaching changes in three years in Wisconsin can't help anything, and getting a guy who underperformed with the talent he had in Pittsburgh doesn't lend a lot of confidence, but they still have Barry, Chryst has experience there and they still have a lot of talent.

Nebraska wins minimum 9 games every year under Pelini and had a winning B1G record every year, and think they are going to improve on that by hiring a guy who has had just over half as many 9+ win seasons as Pelini in twice as many years at Oregon State, not to mention a losing conference record. I get they are the lesser college in the state and will always be at a disadvantage due to the money, but I'm not convinced they made an upgrade.

Minnesota has had some good seasons with Kill, but have beaten only two ranked teams under Kill, both lower than #20, both Nebraska. Not to mention not seeing the Axe in 11 years. Minnesota definitely has the harder schedule. They do benefit by facing both of the above at home.

Do these three teams beat each other up and open the door for an Iowa or Northwestern??

Should be an interesting season.

Riley let is a terrific coach. We have not won anything since 1967, if I were them we would have to prove we could make the next step as well.
They are more rational about it than some of our guys who somehow think we are big favorites.

I can see 6-2 with this schedule. On the other hand, I can also see 3-5.
