per the AP:

The Big Ten's decision to cancel fall sports figured to hit the Gophers as hard as any team in the conference, naturally, applying a hard freeze on the hot streak they enjoyed last fall. Viewing the loss of the 2020 schedule in a vacuum, however, is never the perspective that Fleck and his staff and players would take.

'First of all, we don't believe in momentum,' Fleck said. 'It's pixie dust.'

Building a successful football program, of course, requires constant recruiting of the next class to eventually replace the current core. The Gophers, with Fleck's trademarked 'Row the Boat' culture of using teamwork and optimism to navigate setbacks as their guiding principle, might not have enjoyed their breakthrough season without buying in to this philosophy. So this team is probably as well-equipped to handle the uncertainty as any in the conference, if not country.

'The more time we have to build this football team, the better we're going to be,' Fleck said.

Go Gophers!!

It's understandable that PJ doesn't believe in momentum.... look at that guy. How much momentum could he build up?

I on the other hand...

It's actually subterranean stealth momentum, Fleck is playing 4D chess.

Love ya coach but perception is reality and momentum matters.

Relative momentum > momentum

Which of these schools Does the pause hurt the most?
Wisconsin
Iowa
Minnesota
Purdue
Noethwestern
Illinois
Nebraska

I would argue the pause hurts Purdue and Nebraska the most based on their last two seasons and where their coach is in the development process. They both needed some solid seasons and now have to wait at least until 2021 to get them.

I’d argue Wisconsin is hurt the least. They are on extremely stable footing.

id argue Iowa and northwestern have some questions about trajectory of program (Iowa for off field questions northwestern for on field) that will now take longer to get answered.

If Minnesota had a 10 win season in 2020, that would be better than no season. If Minnesota went 6-6 it is actually better to have no season IMO

I don’t really have any thoughts about Illinois

I think PJ's approach to momentum is related to his coaching.

PJ is about what you're doing to accomplish your goals and improve.

There's no room for appreciating any magical momentum you have that magically gets you something or doesn't get you something without effort, you keep pushing, if you fail you keep going, and improving and moving forward. Nekton mentality.

It makes sense as even if momentum is a thing, how many times do we see momentum shift in a game, perpendicularly in CFB? If it's that variable... how real is it?

I wrote a post about this last weekend. Of course this sucks for everyone in the Big Ten, but I think it actually sucks less for Minnesota.

Not playing games actually sustains our momentum in some ways since our last efforts were so good.

I also think that if the following things happen, Minnesota may have its best chance to win the league in over 50 years during Spring 2021:
  • Season actually happens
  • Shortened schedule with few/no non-West division games
  • No mass transfer exodus out of Minnesota
  • Tanner Morgan plays spring season
  • Expected waves of draft related opt-outs weigh most strongly on Ohio St, Michigan, Penn St, Wisconsin, etc.

Agree with Coach.

With each contest a 1-game Championship Season, there can be no momentum.

Especially true in Year 0. :p
