Anyone watch the realignment video on BTN?

He was probably thinking, let MN and IN play so we know who finishes last. :banghead:

new rivalries could be established, the only sacred rivalry is OSU/Michigan

You really think Minnesota/Wisconsin isnt Sacred? 115 years of history doesnt matter?

it is only sacred to Minnesota and Wisconsin. Probably more to Minnesota and from a national perspective means nothing.

Agreed, anyone outside of Minnesota or Wisconsin has no idea we even have a rivalry, If it dies it dies.

Most Rivalries are local. Even Michigan/OSU is vastly more regional then it is national. I guarantee Wisconsin/Minnesota is very important for Wisconsin also.

all of College football knows Michigan/OSU, no one cares about Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota on a National stage, they are all irrelevant even on a good year.

Historical rivalries

Luckily athletic directors and coaches, people who understand historical rivalries and will advocate for their respective schools, will be a big part of deciding how the divisions shake out and what the future schedules will look like. That BTN clip ticked me off too. Gerry DiNardo is clueless.

Rivalries are between two schools and don't have to be sanctioned by the whole US of A. MN/WI & MN/Iowa annual games should be honered. However, if we are in the same division which I think we will, the games will carry on.

Nothing could be further from the truth. If you have ever spent any time talking about college football with anyone who follows it outside of MN/WI, they will reflexively mention Wisconsin and Iowa as soon as they find out you follow the Gophers.

People in SEC territory are always disgusted when told that the Vikings/Bears/Packers are a bigger deal than Iowa/Wisconsin/Minnesota. They think people up here are nuts for being preoccupied with pro football.

Who decreed that that's the meaning of a rivalry? Oregon-Oregon State historically means nothing on a national level. Neither does Arizona-Arizona State. Try telling those folks the rivalry is meaningless. Neither MN or WI have in-state D1 football rivals, so they are basically equivalent to those others.

In fact, the term 'rivalry' basically means that a game that is otherwise NOT particularly important BECOMES critical to the opponents on it's existence alone, not because of some importance imparted by outsiders.

there is no way they will get ride of the yearly, wis-min or min-iowa game...as deepthroat would say...follow the money...from a min standpt these games make the most money for the U and therefore the bigten

minn-wis is a big deal to the big ten--they will continue to play every year

Beg to differ. The Big Ten Networks own production of the conferences top rivalries, noting the many that have long and storied tradition, Minnesota v. Wisconsin ranked #4. Sounded like one that would be protected to me. I can't wait till 2011 when our Defense will rank in the top of the Big Ten. You will have more respect then. (Beal, Cooper, Rallis, Kirksey, Edwards, Carter, Watkins). Wisconsin may not want to play the Gophers then; I give you that.

I am trying to figure out what 3 were bigger. Other then OSU/Michigan I cant really think of one. Michigan/Michigan state is relatively new and only was big within the last couple decades.

If you've ever paid attention to highlights on ESPN, etc. they always mention the Jug, Floyd and the Axe when reporting those scores. These are not unknown rivalries. Most people know of The Civil War and the Apple Cup. Let's not get our undies in a bunch quite yet. I have the utmost confidence that the oldest running rivalry in college football will be protected.

Really dumb video. The history of the Big Ten up through 1960 is more or less painted on the LBJ.

I hate Wisconsin and Iowa but do you honestly believe people in the Pac 10 and the SEC are glued to the TV to watch MN/Iowa or MN/Wis?

Let's put the shoe on the other foot. When I watch out of conference games unless there's a major intersectional game I always go for rivalry games. Texas-Oklahoma, Mississippi-Mississipi State, USC-UCLA, and Alabama-Auburn are some that come to mind. The games are almost always better than the records would lead you to believe they should be.

Unfortunately that hasn't been the case with Minnesota's rivalries in the last 15-20 years. The Gophers are probably under .500 as favorites, but have only secured one upset (@Michigan, Gary Russell run). Most of the time the Gophers have played like they don't care about the rivalries, while Iowa/Wisconsin seem more hyped up.

I think it's a lock that one of the Iowa/Wisconsin rivalries will be protected and likely both of them will. I do think it's funny that a lot of people want to see Michigan/OSU in different divisions despite them having arguable the biggest rivalry in college football. Even though East/West does not strike good competitive balance, it would maintain all rivalries and be great for Minnesota's potential for future success. Anyone from the University of Minnesota with a voice in the process of setting up divisions should push heavily for the East/West format.

I don't think anyone is saying the game should go away. They can be in different divisions and still play each other every year as a protected game. The same as MN/IA or MN/WIS if somehow the Gophers don't end up in the same division as one of these teams.

You don't rotate Minny-Wisconsin, you just don't do it. I don't care about the nation, even though when you go around, almost everyone knows Minnesota and Wisconsin are big time rivals, you don't mess with the Axe game. I'm pretty sure there is some relevance nationwide about the longest rivalry in CFB history.

Umm.....no. Minnesota Wisconsin frequently makes any top list of rivalry games. CFB live ranked it as the best rivalry game in all of football last year. thanks for playing though.
