Anyone think this is Weber's breakout game?

Just looking back on the 2 games in 07 and 08, Weber has had some pretty good performances, in 07 he had 400+ yards of offense, in 08 he had 4 TDs, turnovers and defense killed us in both games.
I think this might be the game where he flashes greatness again, we've seen it before, often followed by a blah, but I feel like he has performed well against wisky for whatever reason.

One thing is for sure in my mind... Its only a matter of time.

I think all of us agree (as would Adam I suspect) that Weber has not been playing up to his potential. The law of averages would say that if he has been playing below average, then he would need to play above average a commensurate amount of the time in order to maintain his average. Of course it's possible that his average is declining on whole, but I don't think that will be the case.

There will be one game where he just lights the place on fire. Lets hope its tomorrow.

That was going to be my post GGR. It's a comin', my hope is that it's tomorrow.

You've got to think that the comfort level is increasing with the new O, execution has been the big problem, miscommunication with receivers, and I think a playbook that is still expanding have been the bain of Weber so far. Last week there were a few really good plays, crisply executed, reads made, checkdowns, etc. As everyone gets on the same page, it's going to come together.

I think it may need to be if the Gophers are going to win. It is going to be a tough game with both teams being up for it.

I think a big factor is that he is beginning to trust the other WR's. Troy and Brandon earning his trust and him maybe being a little frustrated with his play thus far should foreshadow a good game for Weber.

I hope his breakout game is against OSU. But, I would think after 3 years we wouldn't still be waiting for a breakout game. Also, I'm sick of hearing about the new off. coordinators affecting his play. When he threw the ball 3 ft. over the running back in the flat in Evanston, the play book had nothing to do with that. I watched West Virginia's qb and when a linebacker came free on a blitz, he didn't get sacked, he instead ran for 26 yards and a first down. Weber would have been sacked. That's the main reason why I want Gray in there.

Interesting point, maybe this will be Gray's breaktout game.

I really think you are overemphasizing a few choice bad throws, and underestimating what this new offense is asking the QB to do. Weber calls the protection, presnap reads the D, adjusts, hand signals the receivers, calls the motions, and then snaps the ball. It's an NFL style offense
West Virginia has unreal athletes that run a simple read option. In that type of play, a free LB blitzing yeah Gray would run away for a gain, but eventually he's going to need to do all the little things this type of offense calls for, otherwise the best athletes won't matter, look at OSU, they're screwed because Prior isn't running the O like is needed.

that is some good information. I appreciate your solid reasoning and I will take it into consideration.

I thought he looked downright uncomfortable the first game. With each game after that it has been a little better. I like the trend. It is certainly possible it all comes together this week. I sure hope so.

And, continuing to project the improvement... by the time the Rose Bowl rolls around Weber will have morphed into a giant cyborg throwing defensive linemen to the ground with his left hand as he throws pin point 70 yard laser bombs for touchdowns.

I just think that Weber is being asked to be in his words on Rosen's last Sunday "a coordinator on the field", he's being asked to be more Peyton Manning and less Vince Young

That said, I'd like to see more of Gray too! They have to be bringing him along, and hopefully it will come, using the comparisons above, imagine if Vince Young ran an offense like Manning, unreal. As for now, they are finding ways to limit his mistakes but take advantage of his strengths, IE 2-3 plays a game, they can run whenever to mix it up.

True but I think people are waaaayyy too hard on Weber. You can watch any NFL game and you'll see QBs missing RBs in the flat on occasion or throwing the ball at guys feet from time to time. It happens. Weber throws the ball about 30 times a game. usually 4-5 are just bad throws. 2-3 will be slight misses, 2-3 are often throw aways or are off because he's running for his life. The other 20 or so are right on the money. That's over 60%, and yea I'm just throwing numbers out there but in general Weber is pretty good even though his OL and RBs haven't given him much help most of the year. I understand why some want Gray in but once the backup comes in and you realize he isn't perfect others will want Weber back in. People want the perfect QB. You want Gray's size and speed with Weber's toughness and Bradford's accuracy and Tebow's leadership but you never appreciate what you have. Weber is a good college QB who's played with mediocre or very young talent around him. They say a QBs best friend is a good running game. Weber hasn't had that in his entire career yet everyone wants to nitpick the guy

I've been thinking that this might be Brandon Green's breakout game. He is making clutch catches and Weber seems to be gaining confidence in him.

Hmm...I think Weber will play well.

I also think we'll see the first TD pass by Gray and the first TD catch by Hayo. I'll be back tomorrow to gloat or grovel.

Wisconsin's defensive line will be much tougher than Northwestern's, but I'm also really hope the offensive line can continue improve. That will go a long way in determining how Weber plays. Although not usually a fan of them, I do like the multiple "trick" plays we've already shown this year and am expecting more Saturday. That might keep Wisconsin hesitant enough to make some stuff work.

Weber is a 3rd year starter so I think "breakout" game is the wrong term here.

I can totally get behind this sentiment. Brandon Green is solid. He has been consistently making plays this year, and just needs the ball thrown his way a little bit more. Hell, you know he is going to be getting a lot of 1v1 coverage, with Decker drawing the perma-double-team.

Post of the week.

I agree with this line of thinking. We're gonna see Marquis drop back tomorrow and wing the ball 3-4 times. And with any luck one of these will be a TD.

I agree that they need to use Gray more. But Fisch needs to call some plays where Gray actually throws the ball. Something safe, of course. But even Wisconsin's coaches will notice a pattern developing if every time Gray is under center its either a keeper or a handoff.

I don't think we'll see a breakout game from Weber this week. The game plan will be to run the ball a lot so I don't think the opportunity is there. If we can't run, then I hope Weber goes 50 for 50 for 450 yrds and 5 tds. I won't jinx us by saying how he's ended the last two badger games. I think he plays a solid (no picks), but not spectacular, game.

I don't see a breakout game either. Mostly I hope that he doesn;t think that he needs to have one. If he does, I foresee him making mistakes. I just hope that he plays well enough to win and could care less about his or the team's stats (other than a winning final score). I got so tired of those Wacker games where we would outgain our opponents by 180 yards and lose by 14 points.

I can't believe how Gray throws one 60 yard TD in a scrimmage in April and he is the chosen one. In case nobody has noticed, we have come from behind in all 3 of our wins, and Weber has a lot to do with that.

Adam is a kid I've watched since he started as a 9th grader at QB for Moundsview HS and he has continued to be the starting QB every year since. He's cool and smart. I don't call anything as break-out at this point because he was proven to me way-way long ago. He will do us proud. With the help of a defense and an offensive line, it will be a break-out for Gopher football.
