I remember someone on here mentioning that kids should be able to sign anytime they decide they are ready to commit to a school. Who would that benefit the most? Schools like Minnesota or helmet schools? I see it being good for the schools if they can get a kid to really commit and not just a verbal. Good for the kid to get recruiters off their backs.

However, I can see the kid getting screwed over when the coach he committed to was fired or left for a better job. I think they would have to have some kind of rule that said this commitment is non-binding if the head coach leaves.

Probably me. I've been thinking this for a while now. My thought is someone can sign anytime during their senior year, and after signing you get 10 days before it becomes official (this keeps coaches from doing a hard sell during a visit). It benefits the student in that the school won't at the last minute say "sorry, we've got a better player so your slot's gone"; and the school in that they don't have to keep recruiting existing commits and make "offers" to other recruits even though they potentially don't have any openings. The biggest benefit in this deal goes to the mid to lower level schools as they're constantly having to wait until after signing day to see who's still available for their programs. You can add in the "if the coaches change opt-out" deal as well, I'd be fine with that. Just my rambling thoughts on how to improve the system....

I actually like the idea. I wonder if this has become a made for TV event and too big to change to something like you brought up. I would like it ... although I backtrack a bit because this is one of my favorite weeks of the year. They monitor at my work when you are doing none work stuff ... however on national signing day I say screw it.

I agree, though there's zero incentive and increased risk for a recruit to sign early unless they feel like they might lose their spot in the class somehow. Which unscrupulous coaches might hold over a kid's head to try and get a quick commit. A cooling off period would be a necessary feature.

Yeah, I like the early signing period because I think it provides the benefits (discussed by the OP) but still gives the athletes time to really decide.

Organizations like ESPN and Internet groups would probably fight the change because they most likely earn extra advertising and income this time of year.

What is the latest a student can sign o LOI?
Fleck seems to have a lot more oral commits than places.

I don’t know for sure but I would think anytime after the late date until the season started in the fall.

If you’ve made a verbal commitment, you can communicate that you are not open to further recruiting. Even before your LOI signing, you can choose to step out of the fray, if that’s what you desire.

Continuing to be “recruited” after Verballing is a choice.
