With him out we have a shot, though a narrow one. Despite no offense after Denard was hurt, they held Nebraska's high-powered offense to 23 at home, at night, before the usual 90,000.

Hoke is very confident that he'll play, says it'll come down to how much he practices this week but that he'd be cleared to play in the game if it were played today.

I think he is considered probably> Read somewhere Hoke mentioning if he gets practice time this week. If not then he will not be playing. Anyway, I think this game against Mich will reveal if they truly did figure it out or if Purdue was a fluke game.

Heard the following today via twitter (paraphrasing)

He's number 1 on the depth chart and expected to start.

If the game were today, he would be very close to being ready to play - Hoke.

Hoke also said they would get the QB/WR Gardner some reps this week, so either way I don't expect to see the Freshman.

There was a post on here earlier that summed up his Monday press conference.

In short, he will very likely be ready to go. Although, the backups will take extra reps just in case.

Aside from that, I still think we can be competitive. Robinson has been good but not great this year and he may have some second thoughts about running after having the same injury twice now.

I hope you're right, but I kind of doubt it. As nice as it was to see the rout on Saturday, I think a ton of the team's success was due to some big plays that Purdue wasn't ready for, and their offense getting behind and forcing the pass too much. If Robinson is good to go, I'm afraid we're going to see a lot of him stepping up when our d-line gets too far upfield and taking off for big gains up the middle (along with a healthy dose of Fitz Toussaint). I think we've got a legitimate top-notch pass defense, but I still haven't seen anything that tells me this defense can stop any kind of decent, consistent rushing attack. Here's to hoping I'm wrong.

I fear the upfield rush vs Robinson matchup as well.

If ever there was a time for Kill to break out a game plan that consists of some major run blitzing and trusting our corners to do work on the outside, this is the week to do it. Dare Robinson to go after Carter, and if he doesn't want to he can say hello to Stoudermire on the other side.

Don't try and keep it close. Try and win. Make Denard beat our top 10 pass defense with his arm. Set the tone early. Blitz early and hit him often.

Kill can earn some major brownie points with the public by putting together a game plan that shuts down Denard Robinson. Easier said than done, I realize.

If you blitz him you better get there because he doesn't have to throw. He will simply run and then it is off to the races. I don't think Minnesota has the guys to get there against the Michigan o-line by blitzing. I think the chances are better to dial it back and force him to stay in the pocket.

Michigan is not Michigan good right now. Its all reputation. If we can play 4 qtrs, we have a chance.

I never said Minnesota didn't have a chance. I just think if they try and blitz Denard to win, they will not win. The Minnesota defense is to slow and the LB's and DL not good enough to best their OL by blitzing. Use the DL to keep him in the pocket and then hope the DB's can hold up.

That can be said every week, vs any team.

Exactly. Make him beat us with his arm and not his feet.

Claeys needs to mix it up but I would like to see some man by the corners and assign a spy on Robinson with your quickest LB or S. The guys need to stay in their lanes and not over pursue to prevent the cut back. The DE's need to force him to the inside. DR will get his yards and may even break one or two on us even if we are keeping him in check.

Said that, Nelson and crew need to put up at least 24 for us to have a chance and continue to take care of the ball. The D needs to have their best game as well as the OL.

Bring him on! Robinson is one of the top draws in the Big 10. It's part of the reason why I buy season tickets year after year. I want him at 100%. I want him to have a good game. One more thing. I want the Gophers to win and bring home the Jug! I am ready for the showdown!

If the game gets physical, you can count on Robinson taking at least a few series off. Has anyone ever noticed how he conveniently gets banged up and needs a few series off when he's playing teams that actually know how to defend him (Michigan State, Nebraska, etc.)? Gophers need to get physical with him, and do it early. He's soft, and we all know he can't throw a lick.

It'll be interesting to see whether he actually practices this week, Hoke is a big time gamesmanship guy and may not be completely forthright with Robinson's status.

Nerve injuries don't heal like muscle or ligament injuries. If he's still got weakness in his hand, he may be able to hold the ball but likely will not be able to throw it as he usually can.

Hoke will attempt to do what Northwestern, Iowa and Wisconsin succesfully accomplished against the Gophers - run the ball for big yards. Looking at the tape of those games I'm sure he is salivating at the possibility and believes he may not even need Robinson to run against Minnesota, and forget about a meaningfull air attack. If the Gophers sell out against the run including mixing in run blitzes and assigning a spy for Robinson they may be able to hold down Michigan's offense. Not sure if we'll be able to score ourselves against that defense however....

This is exactly what I am thinking. I wouldn't put much stock into what Hoke says about Robinson's playing status. We'll know when they walk out on the field.

I don't think he could do either effectively. Maybe Robinson playing with a nerve injury is a good thing...we'll see.

A shot of cortisone/steroids on Wed or Thurs and he should be able to go.:)

I'm about due for one on my back.

FWIW my wife is a physical therapist and said that an ulnar nerve injury severe enough to cause that amount of weakness would be difficult to fully heal in a week, at least for a normal person off the street. She did say nerve injuries heal widely differently from person to person too.

I bet that Robinson will play but he will be limited in what kind of passes he can

Attempt.
Ulnar nerve problem is the same one that pitchers come up with all of the time in there elbow and end up with Tommy John if it is a tear or partial tear.
I'm willing to bet that Robinson will play Saturday but he is not going to be able to throw the football much beyond
short crossing , dump off to intermediate short routes. I don't see him being able to throw the deep ball having banged up the elbow the way he did against Nebraska. He is just going to have far to much pain in the elbow to be able to chuck up the deep balls or get anything on it.

He Robinson is still going to be a match up problem because he can run. There is a reason they are preparing Gardner back at QB again and it is likely because he is going to have to take snaps at QB and play there against us. I would be looking at tape of Gardner and Robinson if I were the Gophers defensive staff because I think Michigan is going to be playing both guys at QB this Saturday, Robinson will be able to go but he is not going to be full force or full strength.

Maybe not, but I fear a healthy Robinson is a horrible match up for us.

Ski...I am gonna call you on that. I believe our Gophers have grown enough to stop this over rated scat back.

The Tommy John surgery is not for the nerve, but for the ulnar collateral ligament. I've not heard of a case where the nerve tears, but I'd bet he'd be out if he did. The ulnar nerve, I believe, is the just "funny bone." Must have been a pretty good shot.

You would think so, however, the tackle that knocked him out was very weak. He is just very vulnerable after having previously injured it earlier in the year.
