I just put up a story on Arizona Western's Drayquan Crawford. I had texted Ge"sun Harris and asked him where he thought Bullock would end up and he said Hawaii. Bullock is only 5-9, 180 pounds, but he put up very impressive numbers in his two seasons at Arizona Western.

I am entirely in favor of adding a JuCo RB but i'm not sure if a "scat back" is what we are missing. Bennett is a pretty solid 3rd down back and I would be much more interested in adding a guy like Jamal Womble.

Womble is like 5'10" 230 lbs and he had originally signed his letter of intent to North Carolina (4 star). He has been recruited by the Gophers (under Brew) and by Northern Illinois (under Kill), so Kill's staff at the U is pretty familiar with him. He would be the short-yardage, bruising back that we lack (with the possible exception of Edwards if he stays at RB). I just think he would be a perfect match because he offers us something that Eskridge, Bennett and Kirkwood do not.

I'd rather take the DB Rogers who is a teammate of the two Arizona Western players. We need depth at DB so it seems like he'd be a better fit. Offers from Arizona, Arizona State, UAB, and Oregon State.

I noticed him too, but he seems like sort of anomaly in the sense that Rivals has him committed to Texas Tech but they don't have him getting a scholarship offer from Tech. ESPN also says that he has committed to Tech. However, he isn't in either of their lists of committed players. It makes me think that he either decided to walk on (would be kind of strange with all those offers out there) or that he WAS committed and backed out on his committment.

He'd definitely be a great player to look at, and I do agree with you that depth at CB and WR are more pressing than RB, but I think a JuCo RB would make a lot of sense as well.

I mentioned bullock in another thread. I'm all for adding him or Womble, probably don't need both though. Bullock has some great runs on his highlights, and he is a lot tougher to bring down then his small frame would indicate.

I don't really want to bring a juco corner. Stoudermire, Carter, and Vereen are 3 capable players plus Henderson and Lewis. I'd rather add h.s. corners at this point, if possible.

I'd like to see us add a little more depth at CB. I'd like to see us keep guys like Henderson off of the field unless injuries happen. I'm sure he's a great kid but on a good team I don't see him as anything more than a special teams player.

Small Super Quick Running Backs?

Remeber Darrin Nelson i.e., Minnesota Vikings? He was considered a sort of "scatback" out of Standford and could run and catch the ball pretty successfully as I remember it. He hung on in the NFL for a couple of years...right? Bullock sort of reminds me of Nelson and also caught 15 passes out of the backfield this year. Right now, IMO, the Gophers lack superior speed at the running back position. I understand the short yardage "bruising back" concept, but another "plodder" they really don't need.

That's a valid point and I would take the help where we could get it. I just think we haven't had a power RB in awhile here. Eskridge is a solid runner but he is neither fast nor a bruising back so either would compliment him and Bennett next season. I was thinking more in 2012 when Kirkwood will be take a lot of carries and it'd be nice to have more of a bruiser next to him. But if Kill thought Bullock was better, i'd be fine with that as well.

as multiple situations (short yardage 3rd down, etc.) usually require multiple types of players and personel. Name me one Gopher Football fan that didn't enjoy watching Marion Barber pound Big Ten Defenses, while Lawrence Maroney was on the sidelines peddling a stationary bike until the next series when they would "flip-flop" and the other RB went into the game. I agree with you on the "bruiser" type if they can recruit one with decent speed if the first attempted tackle is broken. Couldn't resist posting one of Bullock's highlight videos as below. Sorry, if this is redundant and been previously posted.

I wish we were talking about Minnesota kids. Why don't we just rename the team the "Minnesota Hessians".

A bunch of grown men fawning over out-of-state kids who just happen to put on their school colors on Saturday afternoon. At least Kill thinks we're good for some big farm kids for the O-line.

Don't worry .... I know where I can stick it.

It's a valid point, an opinion my father shares, but I personally don't get it.

If there was a kid from MN who could come in and play RB next season at the U and help out, we'd be all over him. There are also plenty of threads of people talking up Minnesota guys.

This isn't hockey. We can't fill an entire roster with MN kids and anyone who thinks so is out of their mind. Sure we need to get the best MN kids coming here on a regular basis but they aren't going to fill a team.

It's like saying the Vikings should only draft from minnesota colleges.

I'm one for holding off at least until we see what guys like Tamani Carter, Corey Tindal, and Steve Montgomery are going to do.

I agree, we definitely need to fill up most of the spots with HS recruits. Only problem is those guys aren't likely to be ready right away. With a small junior class, I'd like to see us grab one JUCO CB to help with depth is basically what I was saying.

not missing many

Brewster and Kill have done about as well as anyone is going to be able to do recruiting Minnesota kids. Brewster missed Henderson and Floyd. He got the best player in Minnesota this year. Nobody can give scholarships to the guys who happen to excel at St Thomas, St Johns, Bethel, or UMD. For every one of those who excels there are 25 who are pedestrian at a lower level. We need to become a big enough deal that those kids are willing to walk on in hopes of earning a scholarship.

My assessment on the junior college recruits is that Coach Kill gets it. It is really important for this job, at this level, at this time, at this university, at the U of M that he wins this year. If not, recruiting will become an even more up hill task for him. As Tricks says, we have no junior class.

I think Kill said he likes a pass rushing defensive end, a lock down corner and a speed back in his program...something like that? Maybe the WR and the DB from AZ juco while filling needs are also convenient to help lure Bullock?

We all have our own thoughts on how to restore the Gophers but I like the steps Coach Kill has taken so far.

I agree with you 60's guy.

No one is really going to do better instate than Brewster or Kill until the entire atmosphere around the program changes and that'll take a few winning seasons in a row.

Going JuCo isn't the best way to (re)build your program but when you have such a small JR class it is a necessity. If we didn't bring in more competition for the WR position it could impare the development of a lot of other players. You almost have to look at Harris's scholly like it was Bryant Allen's. Not having a fairly well rounded (by class) on the depth chart is a recipe for disaster.

If we bring 23 freshman and 5 JUCOs to fill some holes, I don't see how we'll be sacrificing the future. If we brought in 10 JUCOs I would start to worry, but I don't think that's going to happen. As it stands right now, if we don't have too many transfers, a bowl game in 2011 seems feasible. If we get a couple of impact JUCOs at critical positions, I think it all but assures we'll sweep our non-conference home games and win 3 conference games. We won our last two games with guys everyone had written off. Imagine what Kill could do with this team by shoring up the glaring holes and "coaching 'em up."

I'm not worried about the juco thing. Bring in a bunch if you want, it's just a matter of following the routine. I'm just not sold on the cornerback, anyone have any videos of him? I saw an evaluation saying he is poor in run support and gets over powered in man to man, doesn't sound very promising for big10 play.

Drayquan Crawford?

I think he is more of a safety than a CB. He was a small LB in HS, a good tackler and moves ok for a S. I think his question marks will come on coverage. I don't think he will be poor in run support but I am not sure if he will be able to cover.

I'm talking about Justin Rogers, he's a western arizona cb that is getting some recruiting buzz.

Safety Artice Kellam is on that team too, I remember Brewster trying to recruit him, but he signed with Ole Miss. That team is pretty loaded, tons of D1 talent on it.

If the JUCO kids are good citizens and I would guess they check that pretty hard, those recruits are not going to fit into the depth chart really well, and give some balance to the classes going forward. If they have any JUCO player at any postion who can stay in school and who fits their system better than the existing players they should grab him.
As far as recruiting Minnesota kids go, if they can play BigTen football, great, but we don't have empty stands and a new coach because the last staff did not try to recruit enough Minnesota kids. We obviously miss on some, and so does everybody else. Can we do better, yes, but that is not why we haven't been to the Rose Bowl in 40 years.

They have Jesse Williams too. He is a DT from Australia, top juco player in the country, he is supposed to be an absolute monster.
