Other than the WCCO radio crew, WHERE IS THE MINNESOTA MEDIA down here?

I was at one of the Gopher practices day before yesterday at a local high school football field.
Obviously closed to the public. Who was there by the exit to interview brewster after practice with camares, etc.? A TV station crew from Waterloo Iowa.

I bet tomorrows newspaper up there cover the game under a "AP" writer.

Kent Youngblood from the STrib is down there, and Marcus Fuller from the Pioneer Press is tweeting and blogging as if he's down there as well. I anticipate we'll see bylines from both of them live from the game.

Go Gophers!!

The local TV stations for myriad reasons, and some being solvable, have no $$ to send anyone to most events. The exceptions: Most Vikings games (although only CH 5 & 11 were in Chicago on Mon. night), the Final Four, the Rose Bowl, other big-time events, etc.

I'm not quite sure any station would cover, say, the Outback Bowl, which would be a big deal, if they made it ... sad, I know.

There was zero coverage last night on the news. All rehash of the vikings and something about the timberwolves getting hammered again. My guess is the economy coupled with a general malaise surrounding gopher football contributed to the lackluster coverage. If we were in San Antonio, I bet the coverage and attendance would have been better. As for me, I am happy to have one more game to watch this year.

It is true, local tv stations don't have the bucks right now.

Heck, I saw no TV coverage of Clem being back in "The Barn" on Tues. night. That to me from a few different angles was a HUGE deal, yet I saw no local TV coverage of it. How is that possible? Frustrating from my standpoint as someone who is looking to get back into the game full-time.
Way worse might be the local TV news directors shying away from sports coverage even more in the near future. There are many great stories that should be told/shown and digging to be done on many angles, but TV-wise, it doesn't exist in this marketplace.

Why on earth would we need to send a local news crew to the Rose Bowl? Or are you just saying that they would have if the gophers were in the game?

I think they should have saved the gas money it took to send Frank V from WCCO to the High School football games with Riley the dog and used it to send the two of them to the Bowl Game...it would have been great to see Riley pick the winner

Once again, when the Vikings pack up in the middle of the nihgt and head to LA they'll all become huge Gopher football fans!

Sorry for not fully stating that, figured it would be presumed. Yes, if the Gophers were in the Rose Bowl tomorrow, the local TV stations would find a way to be all over it.

Can't cover a bowl game but this just shows how far off the Gophers are..
Any of you ever had the unfortunate chance at catching the Jared Allen show on KFAN? I understand the Vikings get all the media but this was unlistenable (is that a word). Horrible horrible horrible.

are tv new directors that clueless? the only reason that a good percentage of men even watch the local news anymore is because of the local sports segments. do they really think anyone gives a rip and wants to hear a couple stiffs rehash the same news that was published all day long on the star tribune and available in two seconds using google search?

do they think more cheesy human interest stories or over-hyped weather terrorism is going to save the day for local tv news? yeah right! what a joke.

I use the Internet for my sports news. I have always disliked local news broadcasts, and now I can get the sports info elewhere.

Last night, channel 9 didn't even mention the bowl game, instead they showed a clip of elephants playing soccer in Nepal or someplace like that. I was absolutely floored that they thought this was more important than the local football team's game!

Jared Allen is hilarious and great to listen to. Dont knock him. Would be nice if some of the Gopher players were guests of some shows on KFAN. Would give positive pub to the team, and would make KFAN more involved with the team and want to talk positively about them.

Yup, just like the University of Houston blew up when the Oilers left town.

Or how the U of St. Louis basketball team got so big when the Hawks left town.

Or how Maryland football overwhelmed the state when the Colts left town.

Or how interest in Ohio State football waned when the Browns returned.

Or how interest in Duke, UNC, etc. waned when the Bobcats came to town.

I could go on with this for quite some time, but I think I've made my point. And that point is, you are clueless on this topic.

Of course it isn't more important. They always try to end the segment with good/funny video. It's called a kicker. Many do it. Their issue last night: The Phoenix FOX affiliate didn't cover any of the Gophers' practices, so no new video or sound bytes were available.

Now there you go again, Doogie, bringing reason and sanity to a message board! No fair! I never thought about the lack of coverage by Phoenix media though being a problem for our stations up here. Good to know. Guess I can't dislike them quite so much.

geez, and supposed media types wonder why people are not watching or reading traditional news anymore and why they are all losing their jobs. hmmm.....let's see......tune into a media outlet that i know will give me coverage of something i actually care about (gophers football) or tune in to watch a stupidly pathetic video of elephants doing *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# in asia. something you referred to as GOOD video. wow.....just wow!

i mean the precipitous ratings drop for local newscasts is really blowing my mind! can anyone else figure it out?

For the average viewer, the video is unique. It's not everyday that you see elephants playing soccer, with thousands of people watching. It does nothing for me, but for 15 seconds, people enjoy it.

I can see the 15 seconds of media coverage on the Gophers...

""And in sports, the Gophers play Iowa State on New Years Eve at the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Arizona.""

"And now a message from our sponsors."
