Jeff Horton...current St. Louis Rams assistant and former Badger quarterbacks coach from 1999-2005 is a candidate for OC according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

This would not exactly be a "killer shot", IMHO. His final three years as UNLV head coach in the late 90s went 1-11, 3-8, 0-11. Not too good. But, he was a grad assistant here in the 80s, was also a head coach at Nevada, was an NFL assistant head coach (although he was demoted from that spot on a terrible Rams team), has ties in Texas, and knows the Big Ten.

I would agree that it would not be a "killer shot". I am a little concerned that we keep going after all of these Wisconsin re-treads. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then our athletic department and football dept. must love the badgers. I would also be a little concerned about how long he would stick around as I see he bailed on Iowa State after only a month on the job when he got a better offer.

I don't know anything about any of these guys. But based purely on resume, Horton is in last place on my list of candidates. I'm not too worried about a poor record at UNLV -- you can be a great assistant and a poor (or hard luck) head coach. But quarterbacks coach for a power running team is his most responsible position related to offense. Working with Linehan is a positive, but "special assistant" can have a variety of meanings.

If our hope is that we can develop the QB talent we have recruited in to the next Brooks Bollinger, Jim Sorgi (he was actually good) or John Stocco then I want to puke.

Get a bucket. Bollinger was 30-12 as a starter. Stocco was 29-7.

I am going to guess that Marquis Gray would probably not be to excited to be utilized in the same fashion as those guys were.

I wonder if we were unable to find a decent OC if there would be a scenario where maybe we get an assistant OC and Shanahan does interim. As long as he doesn't have to do the 24/7 recruiting thing maybe it's a good temp gig for him. A great way to mentor in a young up and comer if we can locate one.

Just musing.

We dont need no stinking badgers!!!

I have always wanted to say that.

I am starting to wonder how big a footprint maturi is starting to have with his "all wisconsin, all the time" approach to things. just because things may have worked a certain way back in WI a few years ago, does not mean that they will work today. besides, we dont need no stinking badgers!!!

Yikes, if this goes through, next year's game with the Badgers will become more of a lovefest than an actual football game.

"Remember when we went to the Rose Bowl way back in the day?"

"Yeah, wasn't that great?"

"Yeah, it was great!"

"Isn't Madison great too?"

"Yeah, Madison is just great!!"

Makes me want to vomit just thinking about it...

I love that idea. Not sure if it would work, but it would be awesome if it would. Not sure who you'd bring up as his mentee, though.

I actually think this might be a better hire than Cosgrove.

Horton isn't a great recruiter, but he was a very good QB coach.

He's still going to run Brewster's offense, so that isn't going to change.

I hear you , so far we already have the following coaches or football staff with Wisconsin ties on the staff, enough already Maturi.

Tim Davis
Ronnie Lee
Clint Cosgrove
Josh Sternquist
Kevin Cosgrove

If you want to copy another Big 10 school can you atleast pick one of the better ones like Ohio State or Penn State. I am surprised that the new TCF stadium isn't an exact replica of Camp Randall. At what point do we take the Wisconsin "W" and rotate it around as the new Minnesota "M".

Yeah, I'm usually not this sour on stuff like this, but the current trend of looking towards Wisconsin as some kind of garden spot from where good coaches spring is giving me a case of the heebie jeebies :(

I'll support the team regardless, but I'm a little worried about the trend I'm seeing here.

I have a friend who worked at the U and states that when Maturi started Maturi would comment on how he wanted the U to be like Madison. We stand alone (NU aside) as the Big Ten Big City ...more trending with the Big City schools is needed.

It's Brewster's butt if these Madison guys do not have the chops. I'll trust brew to make the right call.

This whole coordinator stuff is getting depressing.

Yeah, we wouldn’t want guys who have coaching experience at places like the NFL, USC, Michigan or Nebraska on our staff.

BTW – You forgot to add Thomas Hammock to the list of former Sconies…

So if we are going to be like the good people of

Madison does that mean that we are going to start screwing animals, watch child porn, and be candidates for liver transplants?
I am not sure if imitation is the sort of flattery that we want. The only thing worse than the curvy W that Becky uses as a logo is the ugly tigerhawk used by Iowa. What the hell is that thing?

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I think of Horton I think of the "Red Defection" and all that controversy in Nevada:

"Red Defection
The term Red Defection is a reference used by fans of the University of Nevada Wolf Pack to describe the events following the 1993 football season when former long-time Wolf Pack coach and athletic director Chris Ault's "hand-picked" successor, head coach Jeff Horton, left the team to take the head coaching position at in-state rival UNLV.

The North vs. South rivalry in Nevada is long-established and fervent, and it is no less heated when the teams from opposite ends of the state meet each other in athletic competition. The Wolf Pack, in the north, wear blue, and the Rebels, in the south, wear red. Hence the "Red Defection" moniker when Horton left the North to take the UNLV gig.

The departure left a sour taste in the proverbial mouths of fans across Wolf Packdom as Horton carried over many Nevada assistant coaches with him. Chris Ault would return to coaching for the next two seasons, and while Horton got the better of his former team (and coach) in their annual Battle for Nevada at UNLV in '94, the Wolf Pack would get their "revenge" the following year in a blowout (55-32) Nevada victory marked by brawling, ejections (including UNLV's Quincy Sanders for throwing his helmet, allegedly at Chris Ault), witness reports of Horton taunting the Wolf Pack fans with one Nevada fan in particular hitting Horton in the chest with a full beer, accusations of Ault and the Wolf Pack running up the score, and the largest home crowd in Wolf Pack history."
