Regardless of what happens with Flip in this saga - he is a very interesting figure in this story. He's a U donor so I have to believe that Teague has met with Saunders as part of the information gathering process. Is it possible that Teague consulted with Flip about Tubby a bit and then told Saunders that he wants a 10-15 year solution in Shaka, but is not 100% sure he can get him. Then he asks Saunders- if the University has the need, would Flip answer the call. Flip answers that he will cover Teague's backside if he can't "get Smart" so to speak and Flip would take the job. This would give Teague the assurance that he has a popular backup plan in hand in case plan A falls through.

I said this exact same thing to my wife about 20 minutes ago.

Part of me even wonders if both Flip and Shaka could be on board. Shaka as HC with Flip assisting and focusing on recruiting in state. Just a brain dump.

Bga1, that's what StudwellSr just told me. And he's an old fart like you!

sounds plausible enough...now would you have any evidence to back that up? :p

why not?? i mean flip loves the U.. i think if it is possible who knows.

Looking at Flip's twitter page, it seems odd that he has been silent on both this and the Florida game. Really, Flip, nothing? This is odd for a guy who has been vocal in recent times. AND no reaction to Tubby's firing as an ESPN analyst/MN native? Weird things are afoot my friends...very weird things.

This is very key, in my opinion.

Well, it all has a sense of intrigue to it. I'm hoping for Flip, but then again, I hadn't heard of Kill before we hired him and he's starting to grow on me. NT seems pretty confident that we'll get a really good coach, and I like how strongly he speaks about how Minnesota has a lot to offer and can and should be great at cbb, so whoever he hires, I'll support. And if somehow he hires someone other than Flip and Flip someone gets involved as well?! Well, I just don't see it happening, but it would be great. But I just get the impression that Flip either wants the Head Coaching job at the U, or if they hire someone else, he'll just do something else, like a GM position with an NBA team or something along those lines.

MAYBE?! Maybe UCLA will steal Flip from us?! Wouldn't that suck?!

Could Flip be angling to get Ryan a spot on the new staff ?

God I hope so.

I did notice Flip's twitter as well. It would seem bizarre for him to reach out to certain people and describe himself as not being interested and not being in contact (Danny B and Mike Max) if he was genuinely in the running. It would have made a lot more sense for him to just be silent.

But as much as I'd prefer just about anyone to Flip, I think he's the guy.

Agree about the twitter absence, he would definitely have to tip toe around things more delicately now that Tubby actually has been axed.

I can't see Flip being on a staff as an assistant though, he's either the head guy or he would go back to the NBA.

I think it's possible that Flip takes over and Teague uses his V7 connections to find a younger assistant that would be put on the staff to be groomed for the job eventually so to speak.

It's not an unheard of thing, Larry Brown has an assistant down at SMU that is "coach in waiting" I believe.

Would be a good way to rally the fanbase and local media, while letting Teague put his fingerprints on the next chapter.

I wouldn't mind having Flip. I think he would run a creative offense. I'm not sure how "havoc" would work if teams got to see it twice a year. Hopefully Teague has either Flip or Shaka wrapped up already.

Maybe Norwood convinced Flip to start recruiting (sans violations) to the U (Tyus, Vaughn...) vs. to Tubby so that when the transition takes place (seems like it was inevitable) the blow of a new HC is softened.

Or maybe, just maybe, he's acting like a mature adult.

I've thought about that due to how often Flip is "around", but I don't think you can realistically plan that. Someone would talk.

Highly likely. Flip could be just a consultant on the new HC spot opening up, and perhaps will be used as a transitional piece for the new coach with both his local presence and NBA connections. I'm 99% sure that Flip has his hand in this though.

As a booster, Flip recruiting anyone would be highly illegal.
