Another B1G Coach on the chopping block? Nebraska presser this afternoon

Doc Sadler gone?

If so, that's somewhat of a raw deal for Doc. He just opens up a nice new practice facility that he's probably been pushing for for a while. And he had to coach Nebraska in their first season in the Big Ten in one of its deepest and toughest seasons. But hey, Nebraska has got to do what's best for Nebraska.

"@GoodmanCBS: Doc Sadler has been fired at Nebraska, source told CBS."

Go Gophers!!

That practice facility did "wonders" for Doc :cool02:

Typical stupid comment from Art. You realize they've had that facility for less than a year right? You also realize their program is much further behind than Minnesota right? I hope for your sake that you understand that a new practice facillity would be very valuable for recruiting.

I'm not sure why I'm bothering ... mostly for others, I guess. But the facility just opened last fall, and this would be the first recruiting season he will have it. Doc (and Tubby) would be the first to say that it's not going to help them make more free throws.

Edit: Gophersontherise beat me to it!

Everyone liked Doc as a person but he had 6 years there and the program seemed to be only getting worse. They had to make a change with a new arena opening next year and the need to fill the seats. Doc also shot himself in the foot saying at the start of the year that this was his most talented team yet. The school for the first time is investing a ton of money in the program and should be able to lure a decent coach with the new arena and practice facilty. Doc will be okay as he walks away with a 3.4 million dollar buyout. Some of the names that I have heard mentioned are.

Dana Altman- Oregon head coach, former Creighton coach and a native Nebraskan
John Groce - former Thad Matta assistant and head coach at Ohio University
Tim Miles- Colorado State head coach
Greg Marshall- Wichita State head coach
Joe Dooley- KU assistant coach
Scott Spinelli- Maryland assistant, former NU assistant
Larry Eustachy- Southern Miss head coach

Exactly. That practice facility wasn't built overnight. He has been able to market that to recruits for awhile now. Just because it techincally opened in the last year doesn't mean he wasn't using it as a selling point 3-4 years ago.

First off Doc is not a good recruiter, period. Secondly, you don't think there is a different reaction by a recruit when showing them a drawing of something versus actually going in and being able to walk through the facility. Do you buy your vehicles off the internet or do you like to go look at them in person and test drive them, same kind of thing?

Should Bill Carmody be worried now? Before yesterday, the Gophers had only won 3 games since mid-January (Illinois and Nebraska twice) and both fired their coaches today.

Personally, I think he should be.

Recruiting starts early m'boy with 14-15 year olds. The practice facility is built by the time they step foot on campus.

Buildings like that and a car are not apples to apples.

3-4 years ago? Really? What would his recruiting pitch have been back then? "Hey, I want a practice facility. I have no idea if/when we'll actually have one, but if we ever do get one it may be within the next 1-20 years. Or maybe not. Oh by the way we're awful at basketball. Want to come play for us?" Using a practice facility to help recruit isn't going to have its maximum effect until you can actually physically show it to the players. How long has he been able to do that? How many recruiting classes have even had a chance to be improved because of it? If you think Nebraska's practice facility has already had it's full effect on recruiting then you are even dumber than you seem. By the way, Minnesota is much, much closer to contending for Big Ten championships than Nebraska is, so having a practice facility here is going to be more likely to sway top recruits than it would at Nebraska. That's a simple concept that hopefully even you can understand.

That's my point. The practice facility was likely approved at least 3-4 years ago. It didn't help with his recruiting even though he could've pitched it to kids that would've used it their entire career.

They're definitely closer, but that's like saying the Twins are closer to being World Series Champs than the Royals.

Yeah. To act like Diaz is even close to the same caliber of player as Mbakwe is ridiculous.

You still aren't getting it. Simply telling someone there will be a practice facility does little to nothing compared to actually physically showing it to them. They aren't going to get the "Wow, this is cool" effect just simply from hearing that there will be a practice facility.

I don't follow baseball, so far all I know that's a horrible comparison.

Winona Gopher;513146....How could they?!?!?!?!?!? Don't they realize they had a lot of injuries? They were 4-12, but if they had their center Diaz they would have been 9-9!!!!!

scher215...I hope you know how ridiculous this comment is.

I thought this was said tongue in check. Was I wrong?

Ugh.. just watched the Sadler press conference. That was rough. Just said he didn't agree with the decision to can him, but... off he goes.

He had to leave the mic for a minute because he was about to bust out in tears.. started to lose it.

Pretty sure he was making fun of posters excusing Tubby and suggesting that the Gophers would have had a better record if Mbakwe had been healthy all year.

I think this is a good decision by Nebraska. Sadler and Weber were the two coaches I targeted at the start of the season as being on the hot seat (potentially) and both were fired, and I think rightly so. But unlike Illinois, Nebraska will have a hard time finding the right fit for the job. They had a coach who was doing well there in Danny Nee, and they fired him about 10 years ago. They have a passionate fan base - I don't buy the "football school" excuse for them - they will support basketball well if it's good. They have the fan base and the facilities, they just need a coach who will bring a more uptempo style and has the energy to go out and get great players to come to Nebraska. As we've seen with guys like Bo Ryan and John Beilein, you don't need 5* recruits to build a contender in the Big Ten, so it's possible for Nebraska to build a program that is at least an occasional contender for the Big Ten title, but they have to get the right man for the job. Sadler, with his defense-first style and impotent offense was never going to get them there.

Sadler didn't have the competitive desire it takes to be a successful Big Ten coach. He even complained at the beginning of the conference season about the strength of the league, saying "unfortunately it looks like the best league in the country." They were respectable in the Big 12 last year and returned almost everyone, yet struggled mightily and were every bit as bad as PSU (everyone's pick for #12 in the league this year), yet Sadler blamed injuries for coming in last. Hey Doc, get a clue, Jorge Brian Diaz and Andre Almeida are average Big Ten players who aren't going to give you 5 more wins in the Big Ten when you got beat by 10+ in 11 of your 15 losses against Big Ten teams. Good riddance.
