Hollins scores 21 in win
After coming close against high-powered Findlay Prep, White Station kept a struggling La Lumiere Prep (Ind.) squad in the dark Friday night, scoring a 55-43 decision in the Youth Athletic Foundation Classic at Lausanne.
Findlay, meanwhile, struggled with turnovers and fouls, but still ran away from Ridgeway, 69-44. The Las Vegas-based Pilots -- top-ranked in ESPN's preseason basketball poll -- upped their mark to 10-1 on the season.
Andre Hollins, who scored 46 points in a 70-65 loss to Findlay Thursday, scored 10 of his team's first 11 points as the Spartans (6-2) staked themselves to a 17-7 first-quarter lead they basically rode the rest of the night against LaLumiere (0-6).
The Minnesota-bound Hollins finished the night with 21 points and White Station showed balance with Marvin Williams scoring 10 points and senior Nino Johnson adding nine.
"They started banging better and looking for the ball inside and that helped," said Hollins, who fought foul trouble down the stretch. "I think the game last night gave guys more confidence they can play against teams like this."
Williams, who had just three points against Findlay, said, "I was worrying about all the wrong things last night. Tonight I went back to the things I needed to do."
The Lakers, based in the northern Indiana community of LaPorte, turned the ball over 22 times and were 3-of-8 from the free-throw line, compared to White Station's 27-of-31 night (including 12-of-13 by Hollins).
Ridgeway (1-2) stayed within 16-11 after one quarter, thanks to nine of Cameron Golden's team-high 14 points. But junior center Brandon Lewis picked up three quick fouls and the Pilots built a 32-17 halftime bulge.
At one point in a ragged third quarter, Findlay had 10 fouls to none for Ridgeway and numerous turnovers. But spotty foul shooting and several missed inside shots kept the Roadrunners from ever capitalizing.
Findlay pulled away with a seven-point fourth-quarter run by Anthony Bennett and Texas-bound point guard Myck Kabongo.
"Our one big man gets in foul trouble early, and we just couldn't handle their size all around," Ridgeway coach Wes Henning said.
