At the end of every season some coaches retire and some change schools and the commitments and LOIs that they have in hand will receive releases and open up their recruitment. Every season, during the season HS seniors bust out and/or grow and become noticed and desireable.
Every year some schools have successful seasons and cause the school profile to rise and become more attractive to previously unattainable recruits.
I follow two schools closely. UofM and ASU. HCs Tubby Smith and Herb Sendek are former associates and remain good freinds. I have noted before that they rarely compete for the same recruit. My suspicion is that they talk to each other frequently. They are both very successful coaches.
Last season both had vacancies in the 2010 recruiting class after the season ended. I think that we are overall pretty well pleased with the results of Tubby's late pick-ups of Mo Walker and Oto Osenicks. Herb's post season pick-ups of Carrick Felix and Kyle Cain are equally as pleasing to ASU fans and, along with his midseason acquisitions of Jordan Bachynski, Chanse Creekmur, and Brandon Dunson, contributed to a top 25 recruiting class for him.
The aforementioned are all role players but I submit that a coach has a better understanding of what roles need to be supplemented after he has had a chance to observe his squad during the season and has a better chance of finding the right recruits to address those needs. If valid, this may be especially significant for this year as the Gophs have 7 new squad members, including walkons, and the Sun Devils 10.
These coaching staffs are sharp and I, for one, enjoy the possibilities that they present more than I do the sometimes unrealistic expectations that they engender.
