1.) 11/22/08: a 6-5 weeeskonsin becky team who is in transition can only beat highly-ranked FCS/D1-AA team cal-poly (just like south dakota state is this year) by a score of 36-35 in overtime.

2.) mind you it was only because cal-poly's kicker missed 3 extra points (one of them in OT) during the game as well as a 40 yard FG at the end of the game. cal-poly makes either of those regulation extra-points or that 40 yard FG and cal-poly wins the game over becky in regulation.

3.) i am guessing that a good number of the minnesota program bashers, masonites and plain-old-sky-is-falling-types who post here on a regular basis probably didn't even bat an eyelash at weeeskonsin following that miracle-pulled-out-of-your-arse win by becky against FCS/D1-AA foe cal-poly.

4.) 11/14/09: a now 6-5 minnesota team going through some of their own transitions goes up against an equally stout FCS/D1-AA opponent in sdsu and wins 16-13. i say give south dakota state credit. they are a very good FCS team just like cal-poly was when they played weeeeskonsin last year and they SHOULD have beaten becky.

5.) fast-forward to 2009: a year-older, a year-stronger physically and a year-wiser weeeskonsin becky team is having a pretty good season. although i will say their out-of-conference scheduling leaves much to be desired compared to minnesota's.......wofford?!?!...come on becky......and has probably aided their record a bit this season.

and all of this even though becky pulled a lucky horse-shoe out of their ass against FCS/D-1AA cal-poly. but how in the world is this possible some might say?!? based on the logic and ranting of some here following today's close WIN against sdsu that same weeeskonsin team who struggled mightily to beat cal-poly should have been disbanded, all of their coaches fired, their entire team sent packing.

point is that next year this gophers squad will ALSO be much older, much stronger physically and i think much wiser. we have some great freshman, sophomores and juniors on this year's team who ARE contributing. we have a very nice recruiting class coming in next year. fisch, brewster, weber and gray will have another year of practice together in the offensive scheme.

does this team still need some work? yes, of course. no one denies that. but, a close win against a very good FCS/D1-AA team like south dakota state does not spell doom for next year's fortunes nor does it even spell doom for this year's fortunes in our final two games.

go gophers! ski-u-mah! let's go beat those ioweee hogeyes next saturday!

Put up a fight in Iowa and maybe I'll get some "perspective". Otherwise its just more of the same story that we've seen for far too long.

BTW, this was Brewster's first November win. How sad. If we scheduled SDSU in September he'd likely still be winless when it counts the most.

Stop making excuses...this coach is a snake oil salesman. We are going nowhere fast. Your 'perspective' is a desperate attempt to justify what most sane people have already come to realize - that it was a major mistake to hire this clown as coach.

well, i am not sure what you are, but i don't consider brewster to be a "snakeoil salesman". apparently positivity = snakeoil salesman to some stoic minnesotans. okay.....

btw - snakeoil salesman?? sounds like a standard becky or hogeye term used to describe brewster. at least be original in your disdain for the man. just sayin'

+1 The program is getting better

Bronko, I admire your willingness to stick by Coach Brewster. That said, the week before Wisconsin got incredibly lucky against Cal Poly, they somehow managed to come back from a large deficit against our Gophers. At some point, it is not about how other teams perform, but about how the Gophers perform.

I thought it was unfair to be too hard on Brewster early in the year or at midseason, but now that we are at the end of his 3rd year? If he manages to beat Iowa next week, I could see some reason for excitement heading in to his 4th year. However, what if they lose next week and finish 6-6? That would be 3 years and no rivalry wins, no trophy wins, and 2 straight years at 3-5 in the conference (the Mason average).

Recent perspective:

1) Under Brewster's guidance, we've managed the worst season record in school history, the worst home shutout loss ever, a loss against NDSU, a complete collapse last year, and a regression in performance this year that can't be denied.

2) As Brewster has tried to figure things out in his own head, we've gone from a very effective running team (previous regime), to a spread offense (that was showing some signs on the field and in recruiting), to a power running game/pro-style/what are they trying to accomplish team. Stability is about more than just keeping the coach and staff. It's about instilling a philosophy and building off a foundation.

3) As many here like to say, the cupboards were completely bare here from a talent standpoint when Brewster came in. Then why is this still an upper class dominated team on the field? Coaches don't have the luxury of time. They win they keep their jobs. They lose, well... The best players should be playing whether they're freshman or 5th year seniors. If the ballyhooed recruits are better than the dregs from Mason's tenure, they should be on the field. If the coach is the gauge of talent and he continues to play the dregs, it begs the question of why.

4) What about the performance of the current coaching staff this year suggests that they will get better next year? I've seen every game this year and other than the MSU game, it could be argued that they, along with the players on the field, have regressed rather than getting better. The O play calling today was worse than it was in the 1H last week.

5) As I've said before, the HC's ultimate responsibility is to put players in the best position to succeed. The coaches don't throw, catch, or run the ball or make tackles. But they have to put the right players into the right schemes to do all those things. Thus far, Brewster and the coaches he's picked to run this team have not proven themselves capable of doing so. The OC andn DC revolving door, other than Roof's departure, are a direct reflection of the HC's failure in this regard.

6) Hope is not a viable long-term strategy. True fans of the program, whether they supported the initial decision to bring Brewster in, have been hoping he figures out how to be a solid Saturday coach. That three years into his tenure we couldn't figure out how to move the ball against SDSU speaks volumes.

All this said, Brewster will be back next year. He works for peanuts and Maturi is in love with the bottom line more than Wins or Losses. There's no way this Admin allows him to buyout the FB coach's contract. We'll be debating his performance again next year and many of us will probably be singing our same tired tunes. I hate to say it but I "hope" he finally figures things out...

A message for the "sky is falling" crowd: The sky IS falling. I've supported Brewster as our head coach every minute he's been on the job until the 2nd half today. That's when it became painfully clear to me that it isn't working out. Time to go in a new direction.

well, we always have two things to fall back on becky badger boy when it comes to comparing these two football programs: 6>0; 18>11

and that is all that really needs to be said. yep. :)

Jesus. This board is a like a pistol in the mouth today....

Good luck in Detroit. At least y'all got to witness the Drive today. Not even Pop Warner was as effective at using timeouts. No way the pig leaves Iowa next week. Extend Brewster now!!!

Bronko ..... for a guy that seemingly despises Wisconsin as much as you do.... you consistently hold their program up as a benchmark that Minnesota can measure itself against and follow.

Here's an idea --- give up the obssession, and build your own unique pathway to success. It will be much more satisfying to yourself. In your current way of thinking, it's inevitable that you'll only wind up as a poor facsimile of the Wisconsin program.

Today Bronko is preaching having perspective. It's a little like Madonna advocating chastity.

I agree with you on this. I cannot think of anything that will indicate where this program is at than the game with Iowa. Keeping it close and being competitive would indicate Minnesota is heading in the right direction. Another blowout and I seriously think it is time to start thinking about a placement. I think he should get a fourth year but another big loss to Iowa should make replacing him a viable alternative.
