Comparing the Gophers PPG (offensive and defensive) from before Nolen's injury(5-3 W-L) to after the injury(1-9 W-L) shows an interesting result.

5-3 W-L Offense PPG: 67.75PPG 1-9 W-L Offense PPG: 60.5PPG
5-3 W-L Defense PPG: 66.13PPG 1-9 W-L Defense PPG: 65.4PPG

The defense showed little change(an actual decrease of 0.725PPG) after Nolen's injury; however, the offense tanked by 7.25PPG.

No doubt about it. As good as Al was on defense, it was the offense that really became the big issue. They just had so many stretches where they couldn't score. And their inability to score was against an overall weaker schedule than the teams they have gone 5-3 against.

What is 5-3? Al was never 5-3 in the Big Ten ever.

Make of this interpretation what you will. Data is for ALL games with or without Nolen, not just pre/post injury.

PPP with Nolen - 1.091
PPP against with Nolen - 1.004
PPP difference with Nolen - +0.087

PPP without Nolen - 1.022
PPP against without Nolen - 1.032
PPP difference without Nolen - -0.010

Also worth noting that the Gopher's average opponent was ranked 85.31 without Nolen, 77.43 with him (KenPom).

What does it mean? I don't know. Both the offense and defense were significantly better with Nolen, but the offense more so.

Sorry for the incomplete info. 5-3 was the Gopher's Big 10 W-L record this year through the 1st Northwestern game. I included the NU victory in the 5-3 section (even though Nolen went down the prior game) as that's when the team's decline began.

Big Ten only numbers because I was curious.

PPP with Nolen - 1.080
PPP against with Nolen - 1.075
PPP difference with Nolen - +0.005

PPP without Nolen - 0.999
PPP against without Nolen - 1.054
PPP difference without Nolen - -0.055

Average opponent rank 37.14 with Nolen, 46.18 without.

Offense better with Nolen, defense slightly worse with him.

TLDR; the Gophers played far better against BETTER competition with Nolen than they did against WORSE competition without him. Like you needed me to waste 30 minutes with a spreadsheet to tell you that.

Thanks for the interesting stats guys. Statistical analysis is nice to read but I actually dislike doing the actual work myself.
