It’s been difficult to get a read on Joe Coleman all season.

Sure, the guard is still a sophomore and has plenty to learn. And when you look at the totals, Coleman’s numbers have pretty much gone up across the board compared to his freshman season. So you’ve got to give him props there.

But the concern is that, in the conference schedule this season, Coleman had been inconsistent at best, and regressive at worst.

Go Gophers!!

Can't shoot and doesn't play defense...running the floor is his only option.

But - it's up to the coach to read the players, and determine the best way to reach/motivate them. If a change is being made in the staring lineup, you would hope that the coach sat down with the affected players and explained exactly why the change was being made, what the non-starters' role would be, and emphasized that they would have many opportunities to help the team win.

At least that's what I think a coach should do..

I have to beleve that unless Coleman develops more of an offensive game Ellenson is going to push him for the starting role next year, I think he plays good defense and that is what has kept him in the starting lineup much like Austin Hollins.

I'm hoping for good things from Ellenson as well...but what would lead you to believe he's ready to usurp Coleman's role? I think Coleman gets a bad rap sometimes...he's really our only player that is willing/capable of taking the ball to the rack. Is it always pretty (especially his outside shooting)? No. But, I think he is far from being our major problem.

Coleman is not going to thrive when everyone's just standing around. Honestly, no player is, but in his case it's especially a problem because it eliminates driving angles when the defense isn't forced to move around and it's not like he's just gonna shoot over it. It's like a broken record, but this team HAS to move without the ball on offense, it is absolutely critical. When you don't have a lot of shooters out there, moving without the ball can at least get the defense to have to pay attention to all five guys on the court, not just the ball handler and maybe a screener.

Not much info in this article. Was Tubby asked why Coleman can't dribble? Why he can't shoot a jumper? Why he can't feed the post when Trevor has his man sealed for 5 seconds and is clapping his hands for the ball? Why when he does drive to the basket he ends up behind the back board and then is forced to throw a pass to the middle where 5 guys are standing?

Right on.

Joe can't shoot, that's his problem. He has the physique of a point guard, but plays like a power forward. He's skills are made for the paint. If he had some height, he'd be a perfect bruiser. The kid is just mismatched. It's not anyone's fault. Joe probably though needs to shoot about 300x a day this summer. He's has no choice but to develop a consistent, reliable shot if he has any hope of playing bball after Minnesota.
