A few quick observations:

*Andre Hollins needs to get it together. The senior guard is expected to be one of the team's statistical and emotional leaders and right now, he isn't looking like either. Hollins had five costly turnovers and couldn't spark the team when it needed it down the stretch. Instead, that duty fell to Joey King, who really shouldn't need to be counted on in those situations. "I just don't think he played great, but he did some good things defensively tonight," Pitino said of Hollins.

Go Gophers!!

Perhaps Dre should have listened to the expert medical team at Latenightpompousass.com after all.

He has looked suspect...very insecure on the floor. I expect more from him and Dre if they have any chance of making the Dance. I put that at 25% right now from what I've seen.

The expectation was that he and Deandre would have all-conference caliber seasons. That was the premise behind this being a tournament team. Practically every team in the league - even the sucky ones - has star power somewhere on their roster. Right now, the closest thing we have to that is Nate Mason.

I thought Richard Pitino did a remarkable job last year of coaching a team with a relative lack of star power to the verge of an NCAA bid. Honestly, if the seniors on this team are going to play like this, we have no chance this year.

It's early and we are 4 - 2 with the BIG / ACC challenge coming up @ Wake Forest. With a win there and the remainder of the non conference games at home, we should be playing much better as a team. This team is playing aggressive on defense and the shots and free throws will start falling. I would rather have a team hit their stride in February than November. Big Dre and Little Dre are proven, so I'm not concerned yet, plus the McNeil thing didn't help their focus......

I miss the sophomore Andre. Remember when we all thought he might turn into a lottery pick? Those were the days.

The elephant in the room...Andre is not buying what Pitino is selling. The fact is, he played much better under Tubby. Whether it was Tubby himself, or the system...one of them worked better for him.

Andre doesn't seem to have had his head in the game since the beginning of last season....long before he was injured.

Is he not 'buying in'?........not sure.

Andre's been in a funk too long. It's time for a radical solution.

Andre’s sophomore year he lead the team in just about everything. In most categories he lead by a lot. He lead the team in points, shots, minutes, assists, turnovers, free throws, FG & FT %age etc. To Tubby’s credit, his highly structured and technical offense consisted of - give the ball to Andre. I bet something good happens. Quite often it did.

Neither Pitino nor our current Point Guard Mathieu have had the benefit of seeing up-close that kind of dominant play that can come from the hands of Andre. They were not here to witness it first hand. They don’t know how to use the talent that Andre has. Andre may not know how to use his talent where he is playing now in the wings. He has been shoved to the side and he sort of floats around waiting for the ball to come to him and then see what happens. Besides, he doesn’t appear to me to be a catch-and-shoot kind of guy. His sophomore year we did not have a true point guard. Andre accepted the challenge. He was the guy. He played the point with a great deal of confidence and success. It was a challenge he accepted and met very well.

This year we have no true Power Forward. Another excellent Andre stat from his sophomore year - he was 2nd on the team in defensive rebounds behind Mbakwe. This was a team that also included Rodney Williams and Austin Hollins. They each had a bunch of offensive rebounds but Andre had more defensive rebounds. So we know he can mix it up down low. Here’s where my solution gets a little 'out of the box'. It may partially be a result of seeing the very nice tip-in by Andre while mixing it up down low against Georgia St. Andre does not seem to be at home on the wings. We have a bunch of cupcake teams coming up on the schedule. Again, this year - no true Power Forward. Andre’s Sophomore year - no true Point Guard. SO - WHY NOT? Give the challenge to Andre to play Power Forward. It might take him out of his element and at the same time out of his funk. Try it against a few cupcakes. It doesn’t have to be all the time. Johnny Green was great when he played Center for Michigan at 6’3” a few decades ago. I think Andre would accept the challenge of playing Power Forward and it might give him a whole new perspective on the game. He has a lot of talent. Let Morris and King and Buggs and maybe even Martin play the 3 when Andre is at the 4. Get Andre away from the wings for a while. Maybe even isolate him down low. You can always move him back as we get closer to B1G. Give Andre the challenge of playing Power Forward. I bet something good happens.

All right! Jet-Sweep basketball tips! :)

He doesn't seem to want to shoot or drive to the basket. What the heck? If this is the Andre we have this season we are in big trouble.

I couldn't disagree more with the first statement. The Gophers were often painful to watch in the half court when he played point during his sophomore year. When I went to a couple of games, I could hear people yelling, "We need a point guard out here!" I will admit that he had a beautiful drive and dish to Elliot last night, but Mathieu was clearly a better point guard last year once he got going. Mathieu has had an uneven start this year but I believe he will get going again.

I agree that the team still doesn't have a true power forward, but I don't think the solution is to play a 6'2" guy there even if he actively pursues defensive rebounds. Plus, the team relies significantly on three point shooting so why would you want one of the better three point shooters (and better ball handlers) hanging inside the perimeter on the offensive end? Joey certainly isn't an ideal power forward but he looks to me that he is significantly improved over most of last year particularly on the defensive end.

A few decades ago everyone's center was 6'3" and they had a jump ball after every basket.

If you were to base it solely on their play so far this year, Nate Mason should be starting over Andre.

Not sure if serious...

Pitino appears to encourage driving the ball to the hole -beating people with the dribble-which Hollins has trouble doing. With Tubby he was pretty much a really good jump shooter, but didn't drive much. I hate to say this after watching Bobby Knight last night, but Hollins needs a really good shot fake like Joey has. He also need to move better without the ball.

You have an incredibly short memory don't you. Andre hated playing under Tubby's control-freak glare. Andre may have been permanently scarred due to Tubby. Pitino has done everything to pull Andre out of the insecure shell that Tubby made him. I thought that by now Andre would open up and play, but it may be that his personality is to be quiet and keep to himself.

Really? Mathieu and Morris have been non factors. Hollins is not the man out of those three. Either way, there are plenty of minutes for those four.

He's making freshman mistakes. Not what you would expect from a senior. He gets the ball picked because his dribble is high. He just looks like he is not having fun out there. Thus, the lack of concentration.

I'd like to see Andre used more like Blake was here. Currently the only thing Andre is really doing is hitting open jumpers. Would like to see him in situations where he doesn't have to do as much. Let him run off screens, be the pop man in some pick and pops with Mason/Mathieu, just let him get some low pressure, easy looks to get comfortable and figure his game out.

Agreed. Andre's biggest asset is his jump shooting. He should focus more on that. If guys play to their strengths we can still have a very good season.

No way. We need Andre to keep attacking the rim along with his jump shooting. He needs to be taking more shots. Less out of King and Morris.

Great post, that is what is missing, Hollins has a quick release, elevates nicely, if you can get him in a rhythm he can get hot, it just hasn't happened yet.

The way he is fumbling with the ball he appears to have contracted the Mav's hand decease, not sure what is going on there, he's always had good hands.

Morris should be shooting a lot, he just needs to be smarter about which shots he takes. Basically, he needs to take fewer jumpers.
