ESPN reports that in additon to Josh Perkins, the 9th rated PG in the 2014 class out of Colorado (competition includes Arizona and Gonzaga), the Gophers are also competing against Mich State for Tyler Ulis, a "dynamo" and 23rd ranked PG in his class. You have to be an ESPN Insider to read more about Ulis.

So MN is intelligently casting a wide net beyond Tyus.

Notice that MSU doesn't fool around when it comes to PG either, pursuing Tyus and Marcus LoVett Jr., the #1 ranked PG in 2015.

Tyus don't be just one of the many; be the man in MN.

God no. I coach in Colorado, and first thing his dad is a nightmare. Mullen (Regis's biggest rival) turned down his dad for the head coaching job twice in two years and the Mullen AD told me he and others got very heated calls from him after.

As for his kid Regis has one of the best coaches in all of Colorado and he can't control him. Josh only does what Josh wants to do. I scouted three of their games this year and at least once every game I watched him sit on the ground and cry about calls as everyone else was running down the floor. Against Overland Austin Conway ran right by him over and over again. Conway might be the fastest player in the state, but two different times Perkins didn't even see him before he was in the lane.

He is talented, and could end up being a better scoring point guard then Dre but he has so much baggage it's not worth it. The smart money is on him never progressing because he can't be coached. I respect his high school coach as much as anyone in the state, and if he can't get effort out of him I feel no one can.

I would take Dominique Collier from Denver East before any point guard in Colorado then I would look at Carlton Hurst, Solomon Yon from Cherokee Trail, and even Greg Owens from Mullen before Perkins. And all of those kids I listed are mid major kids. But I have a feeling that someone is going to get a steal with Owens.

You can also read more about Ulis in this article from last month: 2014 PG with Gophers’ Interest Expected at Sunday’s Game

"Ulis, Foster and Alex Ellis, another 2013 Gopher commit, are all very familiar with each other and played together with Meanstreets in the Nike EYBL."

I live in Coloroado. I saw Conway and he may be the fastest guy in the country right now. Big man Davis has lots of potential too. Didn't Carlton Hurst sign with CSU already? I have not seen Josh play but a lot of top 50 type players "are hard to coach". It seems that AAU has given players big heads. I saw Tyus Jones against an overmatched team and he didn't play hard on defense and he got to call every switch and his teammates were left running to his guy all the time. And this is from someone who isn't known as being hard to coach. I guess it depends on where Perkins goes and if that college coach has more than 1 point guard. If Perkins goes to say Kansas and doesnt get in line, he will ride the bench. If he goes somewhere like CU they might not have another true pg and could be in trouble.

I heard Indiana had already offered so Conway and now they gave one to the fr Davis. Conway reminds me of Nate Robinson/washington. Davis reminds me of something like Adrien Payne who is really starting to come on.

With offers from UCLA, Arizona, Gonzaga, Stanford, Colorado, New Mexico, etc., I think he's a big stretch. He just posted a top four of Colorado, Gonzaga, and New Mexico.

His Rivals account shows those schools as his top four. He has "high" interest in those schools, and "medium" interest in the other schools.
You listed 3 schools. According to Rivals the 4th school listed as high is Kansas. Do you know if he's actually released this as a top 4 Royal?

i have to second that. looks more like he plays for "flash". not overly impressed with his stuff though.

Ha! Let me guess, you are around 50 years old. You are an idiot if you don't want this kid, he'd easily be one of our best players and would fill a much needed position with Dre nearing the end of his time at the U.

So he hasn't announced a top 4, you just took the highest interested teams from Rivals. Not exactly consistent with you saying "he had just posted" his top 4. Nice try though.

The whole god boy thing doesn't turn you off?

i'm 22 so good call buddy. the video didn't impress me in the sense that he misses open teammates and when he does pass he tries to make it look like every pass is a huge deal ie spins, etc. he looks like he has some shooting ability from the video but i don't know his stats ie shooting % to make a call on if he is a good shooter.

glad to see you are such an excellent pundit though and instantly know he's going to be amazing.

I'm not so sure why that video turns you off. If the "flash" you are talking about is his ability to thread the needle on some difficult passes then I think that is a huge positive rather than a negative.

The only thing that turns me off from that video is that he wears a t-shirt under his jersey. C'mon man.

He's not the one that know's he's going to be amazing. The dozens of scouts that have him ranked top 40 do.

Agreed.. He is a top 50 recruit.. looks like a good passer, good scorer and has a little flair/attitude. Fine by me.. we need a couple guys that want the rock.. Why would we turn down a top 50 PG recruit again?

ok allow me to clarify what i mean. personally i think he looks like a scoring guard rather than a passer. his talent to put the ball in the hoop impressed me. i didn't see him make any passes that truly wowed me in the sense that he has collegiate level anticipation. i mean yes he does have the talent to throw the ball where he wants but i personally felt he was missing on the anticipation that an elite passing pg needs to set up his teammates before the D can arrive. i think he will be a good college player, but i don't see him as necessarily a pure point guard. i think he would play the off guard/forward role as in being off the ball and using his versatility to score the ball to hurt the defense more than his passing.

again, just a personal opinion and what i see.

also, no one "knows" anything about how these kids will pan out. i mean we had one of the guys who is the epitome of this in sampson. not saying this is at all what perkins is going to do but it still shows that everyone's analysis is an opinion which is why i assumed it was the poster's opinion as well.

I have no idea. I think offer lists are self-reported on Rivals, so I assume his top four is self-reported, as well.

Oh god, here comes the "pure PG" argument again. Why do so many people on this board think it's a bad thing if a PG can score? It's almost like you guys expect the PG to rack up 15 assists and 0 points every game. Is that what you consider a "pure PG"? How many "pure PGs" are there in the country?

Most of the top teams in the B1G have a true PG, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State have good ones, Purdue and Indiana have Freshman that are true PG's. I think Illinois and Minnesota struggle to a certain extent because it is a missing piece.

My concern (generally, nothing to do with this kid) is that when we hear a recruit is a “combo guard” it seems to mean that he’s not a good enough ball handler to be a 1 and not a good enough shooter and/or is under-sized to be a 2. I am all for a point who can distribute and score, it just doesn’t seem we find those guys very often.

reread it. i said he looks like a good player. he looks like a scorer. i personally would play him off the ball since he looks like a dynamic scorer and slasher. i just don't see the great passing necessarily yet. to echo what some other posters said, the pure point guard is a huge asset. did i say i only want him to pass though? god no. don't try to make my comments sound extreme. I was simply saying he appears more suited to play off the ball and have it when we need a score, not facilitate his teammates to do the same.

agreed. of course i probably doesn't help those guys are pretty dang rare!

Lots of high school teams, that aren't stacked, who have a really talented 6'1" to 6'3" guard will start 1 or 2 players who are smaller. Sometimes that smaller guy is the true pg. Sometimes the taller player is a true pg but out of necessity like scoring they play him off the ball. I guess it is up to college coaches to tell who is really a pure pg (many years being the primary ball handler/passer), versus a SG, versus a combo guard who can play point if needed but is more of a SG.

To me Craft is more the pure pg type. He can score some. He plays great defense, is a great ball handler. He is more concerned with getting his teammates shots.

Burke is a scoring pg--i would bet he was the primary ball handler/initiator in high school. He is just as adept at scoring as he is at setting others up.

For the gophers in the last 6 years I'd say Nolen was a pure pg. Devoe, Dre, were combo guards who could play the point if needed.

Clem used to say there's just guards, when talking about a Bobby Jackson type player. Burke is in that mold. Guys who make plays either passing or shooting. The point guard thing is so overused. Give me backcourts like Villanova had when Randy Foye was there. Three, four guys who can handle. My biggest beef with Tubby is he seems not to understand the game is now all about guards. When you see this team wilt against zone pressure that's pretty clear.

I agree with your main point of watching good guard play. I like watching teams like Nova when they had Foye. It's a fun game to watch, but honestly not a style that works in the B10. If anything, tubby has shown smaller lineups than his opposing B10 coaches with Coleman at SF all year. That's also been evident by playing players like Rodney(4), Trevor(5), Blake(3) and Damian Johnson(4) for example in a position that makes us "go small".
