OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Speed
Is and H-Back in the making. Possesses excellent measurables for a wide receiver, but below average height for a tight end. Bulk and physical development will lead to him outgrowing the wide receiver position. Movement skills are more similar to a fullback or tight end than they are pure wide receiver.
Separation Skills
When working on the inside he shows nice initial quickness and good overall agility especially when working against zone coverage. Shows good recognition skills on short and intermediate routes to locate voids in coverage. Is capable of stretching the seam and muscling his way through tight coverage at linebacker at safety level. Has a little bit of a short stepper with some hip tension that can limit his ability to explode fluidly out of cuts.
Ball Skills
Is very natural handling and catching the football. Shows confidence and has the size to shield defenders from the ball as well as attack the ball at its highest point. Has soft hands and will extend away from his frame to secure the ball.
Big Play Ability
Shows limited big play ability when employed out wide. Is a short to intermediate range target as an H-back that right now is at his best vs. zone coverage. Shows adequate-to-good top end speed and can be very difficult to tackle one on one in the open field. Plays almost primarily as a slot receiver or flex tight end which is actually a very good role for him. Remind us of a shorter version of CJ Uzomah at Auburn.
Bottom Line
Brown will likely be a different player three years from now. Time in the weight room and time with his hand on the ground as a tight end or fullback will enhance his versatility and value to the offense. Must develop as an in-line blocker. There a lot of tools to mold here.

Sweet!

Another long, athletic receiver. Me likey.

I'm assuming the Florida offer was not on the table anymore?

Either way, great get.

Ryan Burns said a while ago that the coaches want him bad. He wash't kidding.

another high quality, high character commit! Love this staff!

Almonzo is a great addition to a very solid class. He looks to be a big time player.

He seems like a great fit in the Minnesota offense, great size, nice athlete, he can block, what's not to like? Welcome!

I am tired of all the ny sayers. Why do most people feel that the only way we can get a quality player is if school A has cooled on him. It's time to realize that this staff knows how to get it done. They recruit hard and they recruit the kids that will let Minnesota win. They have many contacts around the country and their record speaks for them. They are getting these kids because of all the hard work they have put into football for many, many years. JERRY, JERRY, JERRY!!!!!!!

Absolutely love the back and forth between him, Croft and Buford on Twitter. On my phone so can't embed. If somebody's willing to take the time it would be great for our non Twitterers.

Very nice commitment, it will be interesting to see where he plays. It seems like watching Jerry Gibson (if he doesn't redshirt) should give us an idea on how Brown will fit in to the offense. Really nice to see a couple kids in row commit that had strong offer lists (more important than stars IMHO).

I do feel like we need a WR with big time speed in this class. Hopefully the staff is out looking for that player to complement the players they have signed/had commit over the most recent recruiting cycles.

It depends on wins. Just keep winning baby! Win more and you'd start to see even better recruiting classes in 2016 & 2017!

The bad news: he still plans on taking all of his official visits.

By Matt Humbert at TDG - Minnesota Football Recruiting: Almonzo Brown Commits

Suwanee (GA) North Gwinett wide receiver Almonzo Browncommitted to Minnesota tonight, the fifth prospect to attend Kill's Recruiting BBQ weekend in late July and make the choice to become a Gopher. Brown is a 3 star prospectaccording to 247Sports' Industry Composite, choosing Minnesota over listed offers from Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Kansas State, Kentucky and more. Almonzo is the 11th member of the 2015 class and first receiver/h-back target to join the fold.

Scheme Fit

Already stated: he's either a big playmaking wide receiver or a future h-back. Regardless, he'll be a weapon that can perform Job 1A for Minnesota wide receivers (block) while capable of Job 1B (do good things with the football). The Limegrover B1G offense has evolved past the more power spread attack he favored against MACtion defenses to a full fledged assault courtesy of fullbacks, h-backs and tight ends. As such, the Gophers play much more 22, 21, 12 and our favorite, 31, personnel packages; an offense predicated on so much tight end/h-back/fullback packages and motions requires not only a diverse set of skills among those type of players, but a lot of bodies too. As a projected h-back, Brown is big and physical enough to handle inline blocking responsibilities.

At wide receiver, Almonzo has enough speed and athleticism to hang in the Big Ten, though he'd likely try to just out-physical corners at the line of scrimmage. He uses his frame to shield himself from defenders and shows adequate quickness and agility to make a few defenders miss in the short to intermediate passing game. He projects more as an inside or big slot receiver who can find holes in zone coverage than a true flanker prospect, which is more than fine given the lack of taller slot receivers on the roster (sans 2014 signee Conner Krizancic).

Does this guy play any defense in high school? He looks like a well built sturdy athlete and if the measurements are right 6'2" 215 pounds he could be one athletic OLB in another couple years. Just throwing it out there and H-Back makes sense.

Leaving for vacation in an hour, great news to leave on. Heading to Leech lake, will check out the museum in Walker, for those of you who don't know if you are in that area the museum in Walker has some interesting Gopher history to study.
Welcome Almonzo, can't wait for you to don the maroon and gold.

I really hope this kid pans out as an offensive skill position player. Adding a OLB isn't that big of a concern from what I can see.

For everyone suggesting H-back, that's certainly a possibility but according to Brown the staff has said they plan on using him at the Z receiver position. He said they want to use him like Larry Fitzgerald, wouldn't argue with that!

Looking at my TV guide for tomorrow and on FSN+ there is a full day of high school football which includes Almonzo Brown's North Gwinnett team scheduled to play McEachern at 7:45 tomorrow night if anyone wants to get a chance to check out one of the newest Gopher commits.

I'm on board with what Kill is doing just as much as anyone, and certainly didn't mean anything by my comment. I just didn't know a lot about him and assumed there would be more mention of his Florida offer if it truly was still on the board.
