How about a fun little exercise. Using only high school players from MN, what would your Gopher lineup look like? Here is mine for starters:

QB - Joe Mauer (Steve Walsh maybe?)
RB - Marion Barber III
FB - Thomas Tapeh
WR - Larry Fitzgerald
WR - Michael Floyd
TE - Jon Carlson
OT - Seantrel Henderson
OT - Jimmy Gjere
OG - Tommy Olson
OG - ???
C - Ben Hamilton


DL - Willie Van DeSteeg
DL - Karl Klug
DL - Broderick Binns
DL - Willie Mobley

As you can probably tell, I'm a bit on the younger side, not coming up with much outside of the past decade.

Good one with John Alt. He played for the Chiefs I think.

I forgot about Weinke, but he didn't impress me *that* much at FSU considering all the talent he was around. I guess we'll never know with Mauer, but wasn't he like the best QB we've had in high school? I was wondering if someone could compare him to Steve Walsh.

Royston and Barber are good additions to the secondary.

I'd put Jeff Wright (S) ahead of them.

Edina.....started 8 years for the Vikings.

Nate Triplett is not in the same ballpark as Jay Foreman was at linebacker.

I was thinking Alt as well. I'd add Ray Hitchcock, Rasmussen(sp?) Sean Lumpkin, Michael Lehan.
 


I'm 30, so I can't speak to any of the guys from th 70's, 60's etc.

You could probably add Craig Dahl from Mankato East as a Safety. Was a hell of a QB for the state runner up in 2002 I believe, but now is a staring S in the NFL.
 

How can you have Mauer on the list? There's no way of knowing he would have been a successful college QB.
 


-Karl Mecklenberg has to be on that list.
-DT all day over MB3.
-Walsh over Mauer and Wienke. (How about Brett Sadek at QB?)
-If you can't find a FS, why not Royston?
-Trevor Laws at DT

The players I suggested were all MN high school players and actually played for the Gophers.

I realize that was not the criteria of the OP.
 

One player that hasn't been mentioned yet is LB Craig Sauer from Sartell.
 

At this point the safeties would have to come from this group.

Rodney Lewis - Mpls Central/Nebraska/Saints
Craig Dahl - Mankato East/NDSU/Rams
Dom Barber - Wayzata/Gophers/Texans
Sean Lumkin - Benilde/Gophers/Saints
 

Mauer is a freak athlete (like Winfield and Molitor), but if you are going to include him, you might have to include those two guys as well.
 

Yeah I agree with a couple others on this thread. Mauer was a great high school quarterback but in no way should he be included on this list. He never played a down at QB in college.
