All Things Teams Into the Dance: One Thread

Liberty (15-20) beat Charleston Southern (19-12) to go Dancing.

This is just another example of the pros and cons of the conference tournaments being the auto-bid as opposed to the league regular season. I personally think that the regular season champion should get the auto bid, particularly in those leagues where there's only one bid... But I suppose I can see the other side- it's certainly exciting to watch and cool for those teams that come out of nowhere to get a bid.

Edit: Good idea to have it all in one thread

3 teams clinched auto bids yesterday as well:
Flordia Gulf Coast won the Atlantic Sun over Mercer
Harvard clinched the Ivy League with a Princeton loss
Belmont beat Murray State for the Ohio Valley Championship

Thanks, sorry I missed those yesterday.

I've always thought there was an easy solution. If the regular season winner doesn't win the tournament, have one more game between the regular season and tourney winner. Basically a one game extension of the conference tourney.

Creighton wins the Missouri Valley over Witchita State 68-65.

I agree. It almost makes too much sense... there must be some reason why it can't be done. Is there not enough time to fit the games in (in the case of that tie-break scenario)? Something else?

Teams in as of Sunday games:

Liberty, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard, Belmont. More to come today.

Would probably introduce too many potential headaches to make it worthwhile. I like the idea of the conference tournament champ getting the automatic bid. if the regular season champ loses the tournament but was good enough to warrant a bid anyway chances are they will get in. in most cases these are just the first round canon fodder teams anyway.

Teams in as of Monday games:

Liberty, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard, Belmont, Davidson, James Madison, Western KY, Gonzaga, Iona, .

updated above, Monday's additions are bold.

There are multiple leagues where there is almost no chance of anyone other than the auto qualifier getting in. It's like the reverse B10- their RPI is dragged down, fast, by their conference. A team like Middle Tennessee won their league by 5 games but didn't win the tourney, so now they may not get in. So what's the point for a small conference team to even play the regular season (I mean, I get the point, but still... with no chance of a tourney bid?). And some (most) will be one-and-done in the tourney, but you know that that can be huge for their program/fans/players.

Post season conference tournaments are one of the worst inventions of all time.

I actually agree with Bobby Knight on this.

Tuesday update:

Liberty, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard, Belmont, Davidson, James Madison, Western KY, Gonzaga, Iona, LIU Brooklyn,

The Jackrabbits are on schedule to knock off the buffalo. Will be fun to watch Wolters in the tourney, and always fun when the buffalo get sent home.

Watching Wolters is like eating dessert for two hours.

Station19 --

I believe the NCAA liked the idea of post season conf tourney's, because it was a way to keep fans of lesser teams interested in watching cbb until at least their teams lost in the conf tourneys. Or at least that was the hope. Same reason they are trying to deemphasize team's last 10 games records, and put more emphasis on the entire season as a whole being significant, because they hope it will make people more into cbb from the beginning of the season. Too much focus has been turned to March Madness, but their doing the conf tourneys were part of the reason for the focus being turned so heavily towards March. lol

They just can't figure out how best to get as much money as they possibly can out of this whole deal?

I fully expect the field to be expanded to 72 soon.

One more on Wednesday, that is it for today:

Liberty, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard, Belmont, Davidson, James Madison, Western KY, Gonzaga, Iona, LIU Brooklyn, SoDakState, Valparaiso, Bucknell,

$.....the only reason.

The conference tournaments just add to the devaluation of the regular season(conference and non-conference). Just look at the attitude of many GH posters. I would guess it's more of the younger posters that place less value on the regular season.
