All Things Movie/Documentary Reviews/Recommendations Thread

I saw A Complete Unknown. Spoiler Alert, things work out all right for Bobby Z from Minneapolis.

I thought it was great, both the story and the music. Really great set design. Just how I imagine the Village in the early 60s to be.

How they pulled off the song performances, live to tape with actors not known for music chops was just an unbelievable achievement. Had to be over 50 songs referenced.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on watching A Complete Unknown. I've held off mostly because I'm not sure if the wife would care for it, and in tiny part because I was never a huge Dylan fan myself, despite living on the Range for a fair bit. She gave the green light not long ago so I would guess sometime this week we'll give it a go.

Finally saw "Anatomy of a Fall" the other day. It was decent, not sure it was great? We enjoyed it, I just don't know if it was enough to tell others to run and watch it.

For Dylan, I don't know that I would classify myself as a "huge Dylan" fan either but have always at least appreciated him. I also have always recognized how prolific is talent is as well as his influence on others. Indeed, there are countless number of his songs I have actually preferred cover versions (especially the Byrds).

In that context, I really enjoyed A Complete Unknown. On the other hand, if one is completely turned off by his music, it's going to be a long haul watching it.

As for Anatomy of a Fall, I felt it was unique in how it was told and the drama sucked me in amidst what I thought were really good performances. SPOILER ALERT - I also appreciate how it's still ambiguous...as to whether or not he jumped or was pushed.

Probably enjoy action movies too much, so of course had to take in The Beekeeper II, or it’s real title A Working Man.
Jason Statham once again taking on an inordinate number of bad guys.

Black Bag starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett is a real whodunit. Six intelligence agents involved and the end game is to find the guilty one. Keeps a person guessing until the very end. Directed by Steven Soderbergh. Recommend it.
I had no idea who was responsible, I figured out who wasn't though.

Maybe a 2nd viewing would help clear stuff up.

I saw The Friend yesterday, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Naomi Watts gives a particularly impressive performance.

What was more unique and amazing though, was the dog character Apollo, which is a 151 Great Dane. How they trained that creature, directed it and captured it on film was really a remarkable feat.

Saw The Alto Knights starring De Niro as both Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. Not sure why he had to do that. Think it might have been better with another actor handling the Genovese role. The gangster jargon got a little over bearing.
Would rate it one of the lower Di Nero mobster movies.

Like a fool decided to watch In the Lost Lands starring starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista. Comic book type of movie. Don't recommend.

Yeah this one is definitely on my radar. I love a smart spy movie

I recently saw The Ballad of Wallis Island. Good. Very sweet movie. I wish that the promos/trailers had not given so much of the plot away.

If there's a movie I would compare it to in terms of style, setting, tone and humor it would be Local Hero.

Carey Mulligan again shines and has a pretty solid track record of picking worthy projects & film makers. Despite a lack of music performance background, this is the 3rd role I have seen her deliver while playing a singer.

Not impressed with Havoc, a Tom Hardy movie that came out on Netflix yesterday. Over the top story line, John Wick hail of bullets, lighting was way too dark, setting too dirty. Seemed like a "let's slam a movie together with as little effort as possible and make some money". Maybe a 5 out of 10 for me.

Finally got around to "A Complete Unknown" last night. We liked it, definitely worth the watch. Not sure if we "loved" it but we liked it. I had no idea about him and Joan Baez, that was interesting. Hate to say it but I was kinda surprised he was still alive, had to look it up after the movie.

Not only is Dylan still alive, he's still touring. Just played Mankato earlier this month.

If you want to get pissed off at how shitty our judicial system is, watch A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix about the Jason Corbett death.

Decided to watch "To Catch A Killer" on Netflix.

I'm not an overly harsh movie critic, I'm generally easily entertained. This was one of the worst movies I've seen in a while. Bad characters, bad acting, bad plot line, pretty much across the board. Just a ridiculously terrible movie.

I was actually thinking of checking this out. Now I'm not sure?

The documentary was good, I’m just not a fan of how the story ends. I kinda knew the story ahead of time but didn’t realize how ridiculous it was.

And the cold streak continues...

Watched "No Remorse" (Tom Clancy) on Prime, with Michael B Jordan. I read a few Clancy books when I was a lot younger, always like the movies, thought I'd give it a shot. Not good. Hard to believe Clancy had much to do with it, other than maybe taking a few bucks so they could use his name.

The casting was probably the worst part; Michael B Jordan was just not believable, not well cast to carry a movie like this on his own, and the rest of the cast was essentially shit. Not good.

Based on being released by A24 Studios, solid reviews and Paul Rudd, I took a flyer on the film Friendship.

I'm not sure I can recommend this very dark comedy, nor necessarily advise against it either.

It's something.

It has aspects of The Cable Guy, which I really enjoy but also Single White Female (perhaps my least favorite movie of all time).

Other films that come to mind, another Paul Rudd film, I Love You Man (but Rudd in the opposite situation) and Fatal Attraction.

So there you go. The popcorn was awesome.

You know, I know people pissed off on both sides of this one - which maybe makes it interesting. I don't know. It was decent but to me it was pretty cut and dry.

Yeah I don't know, there's way too much lying by the defendants for me. Nothing they say seems to add up. At the very least the evidence points to them going way too far to argue self defense, even if the altercation did start how they say it did.

The craziest to me is the mom. She was so worried about Corbett but then just went back to sleep after hearing screams. They're all a bit crazy.

You and I are on the exact same page.
